That would make sense, but the previous movie was Mario 1 but with Luigi instead of Peach, and shoehorned in DKC and Mario Kart because the theme park needed shilling, so who actually knows.

Point is, Yoshi isn't a strong hook for a sequel. Yoshi is in the "real world" now, cool. What's interesting about that? I feel like this was done so Yoshi can do cute shenanigans on Earth for a bit, akin to Minions or Secret Life of Pets, because god forbid Illumination actually try to make a real movie and the Mario movie have a sense of adventure to it
