Earthbound's the first game I played, and I still enjoy it a lot. I hope that means I'll enjoy the other games even more when I get to them.
But yeah, I guess I'm being a bit too harsh on him. His shield PSI's actually a lifesaver.

I really think he was added late in development. His party role is a "wild card" that isn't good at any one thing. When Buzz Buzz recites the prophecy he alludes to the other party members but not him.

Paula already has a lot of offensive skills, and at this point they're even stronger than Poo's. I think he works better as a defensive mage, being able to heal and apply shields to the party so that Ness and Paula don't have to waste a turn doing so and keep dealing heavy damage.

Honestly, it's not necessary to buff him up, and he only has like 4 equips in the game and they're all designed specifically for him. The Sword of Kings makes him significantly less useless, but even then you can breeze through the game without it.

The party is comprised as follows:

Poo- Extra healer and shield if Ness is busy casting/doing something else.
Jeff- Boss killer if you're not too stupid to replenish big/mulit bottle rockets periodically.
Paula- Offensive PSI/Mook neutralizer.
Ness- Offensive/Defensive/Healer/DPS/Tank. Seriously, you don't need anyone else.

i'm a little biased because M1 is my fave but i think it's not as bad as people say it is. it's definitely janky due to its age, but out of all the 3 mother 1 has the most charm. plus unlike m3 and earthbound it's completely nonlinear after the first boss so you can really choose your own adventure and explore the world to your own leisure
if the nes version is 2hard4u you can always play the gba version which has an easy mode (which also makes the annoying random encounters way less frequent)

Poo is like the spare tire character. He can't eat most food, but he gets a big bonus from water for healing PP, so you can stockpile that. He can do decent magic damage in tandem with Paula when hitting enemies weaknesses. The fact that you now have two spell casters means they can dogpile on one target with magic, meaning you can save on PP by using a lower tier skill. Or blow up certain targets before they get a turn. He should be your main healer during battles, while Ness heals outside of them. Or you can heal two characters at once since lifeup omega comes late and is very expensive. Ness learns heals faster, but Poo's turn always comes faster than Ness's. Plus, Ness hits like a truck, so it's way better to have him attack whenever you can. Not having to buy gear is a plus, because you don't have an extra expense attached to him. He is a red mage with the inexpensive traits of a monk that exist to lighten the load of party.

When I was a kid, I thought that Jeff was practically useless since I never bothered with bottle rockets.

I never got the Sword of Kings on any of my playthroughs. It's not like Poo is that useful against the final boss anyways, aside from defensive magic.

1 is really not very fun. 2 improved on 1 in every single way in my opinion.
Only if you're really dying to 100% the MOTHER series should one play 1.
1's music and soul and sense of adventure are great but the gameplay is easily the worst and the last 20% of the game's balance was not playtested due to time constraints and the common enemies are stronger than bosses so you have to run from every encounter.
Playing 2 first was the right move tho because now you'll appreciate 3's improvements and differences.

Absolutely play Mother 3 after completing Mother 2. Mother 3 actually has good gameplay and a menu/inventory/batatle system that doesn't feel like a fucking chore. The problem with the first 2 Mother games is that you can feel how a game with great ideas is held back by having a mandatory DQ game slapped on top of it, with shitty controls to boot. Mother 3 improves on EVERY aspect of the game.
You should definitely play Mother 1 after 3 of course.

There are multiple enemies that are resistant to the physical damage of the bazooka or worse have physical damage reflection. The bazooka falls off hard while Starstorm becomes a nuke you have to use against enemies where you only have one round before they would otherwise nuke you, or take out an entire line of enemies before they can get off their attacks. You'll start to appreciate it when it starts to get used against YOU. You are just pissed because Anons hyped Poo up in the last thread when he is just there to fill in the gap between the other three characters when normal enemies in the second half of the game can really push in your shit and you start having to play tactically.
