Racing Games
What happened to more simple racing games?
now these days it's either simulators or an open world festival with the most recent hypercars.

Faggots forget that racing games can be fun and instead wanted to boast about huge numbers of licenced cars they'll never drive around the same real world courses in every game.

People's never ending obsession with realistic graphics meant that racing games without licensed cars were seen as "lessor" as time went on.

Car manufacturers don't want their cars getting damaged so the games naturally became more tame with time. Forza Horizon 1 has better damage than Forza Horizon 5, the bumper can actually fall off.

Need for Speed Unbound tried to add a little flair into it's presentation and people went into a meltdown. Even here people shit on it because it dared to attempt something a bit different.

At this point developers don't even know how to make an arcade style racer and if they did, the racing audience would relegate it an acquired taste.

Burnout 6 and Ridge Racer 8?

You mother fuckers don't deserve it.

To this day I can't figure out if Burnout Paradise was actually worse than the PS2 titles or I just got bored of the formula. I've played it like at 5 different times in my life and I never finished it.

it is worse. the open world kinda ruins the burnout experience.

In ridge racer's case Vita sucked and "we want the burnout audience" Unbounded also sucked. Plus Bandai does not care about older Namco IPs that aren't Tekken or arcade shit they can resell in collections.

games take significantly longer to develop now with a lot more resources needed
so people (mainly AAA developers) dont experiment much because its simply not worth it, thats why indie devs are the only hope these days

I really liked carx street, was like 7 euros on sale, pretty nice features, good realistic-ish handling, nice map
FUMES is coming out soon, not really a racing game tho
Tokyo Xtreme racer should get a full release this year, there was also a JDM - japanese drift master or something game, seemed okay

>>715995605 is right, unbound was fun to play, contrarian fucks complained so much about it, as if they would have played a new nfs anyway

Have they tried making the cel shading effects without loading the game up with unskippable dindus and Soundcloud rappers?

one thing people don't talk about is how hard it is to develop good ai opponents for racing games
particularly if you want them to be more than glorified road bumpers and actually follow the same physics and performance statistics as the player

did you actually play it? AI cars are the best I have seen in any recent games, with them slowing down while flashing and then turning to avoid you, unlike other games where they just slow down

When people discovered Unbound was gonna have cel shaded graphics they expected the game to look like a modernized version of Auto Mobilista, not like slightly more HD Heat with low budget cel shaded human models and SFX that was made in paint 3D.

They should've just went with more stylized humans desu. Cool toothy niggas, shounen protag whiteys, Wangan-artstyle old farts, tsurime anime tomboys, throw in a drill hair ojou-sama who never works on her own car (crucial), if you want anime audience make it look actually anime and not PS1 cutscene models ported to PS5.

the open world was a nice novelty, but just didn't really gel with the gameplay of burnout

with midnight club 3, you could see ahead well enough, and the speed and layout of the cities made it actually possible to plan your route properly
this didn't really work in burnout all that well

also no retries

I think forza was right to try learning algorithms using player data.
Anonymous No.716007015
>>716005520
that only works if you have over a decade of data collection from millions of players and a fairly consistent realistic-ish yet forgiving driving model. a smaller dev making an arcade racer (or, god forbid, an ag racer) is shit out of luck for that method.

>now these days it's either simulators or an open world festival with the most recent hypercars.
Open world festivals are really just a Forza Horizon thing. Also, the reason developers chase sim simulation is because there's no real reason not to. Why would you pursue arcade style racing when games like GTA have already done everything arcade racers try to do?
Also, with sim racing your game actually has depth. It can be played over and over again and can support a real ecosystem, instead of just being cool for 2–3 months and then becoming dead

>games like GTA have already done everything arcade racers try to do?
because gta has shit physics, shit open world that understandably looks more like a city than a racetrack (compare to, say, most wanted's open world aka unending medley of best-of racetrack corners) and extreme penny-pinching and pay-to-win?

Forza has never actually done that. Turn 10 lied about Drivatars from the start and Playground continued it. The single, sole thing they do is use a community livery if the player is using one.
