second, hyrule field is what we call a "hub world"
hub worlds are usually mostly barren and empty, while the connected levels/regions are far more packed.
its also spaced out just enough that your first time leaving the forest (and without complex mechanics, hence the average first time player) you wont get to the castle before the gate closes so that you're introduced to the fact that the day/night distinction actually changes the way areas work.
and finally it serves as an incentive to actually use epona before you get the teleport songs in the second half of the game.
