Don't even care about MC anymore and I think Mojang is a shit company, but you're being disingenuous if you think there hasn't been a content update since the nether. The game has more than tripled in size since the nether update.

Blatant lies don't do a very good job of getting people to agree with you.

The issue is that rather than the new updates adding anything of substance that actually works together, they just added a bunch of disconnected useless bullshit. Resources that do literally fucking nothing or have a single use that no one in their right mind will bother to go out of their way for, animals that do nothing beyond existing that the tranny devs only added to virtue signal about IRL animals. Lets also not forget that they used the latter excuse to NOT add content to the game that the fanbase wanted because... "um, the heccin frogs IRL can't eat fireflies! We can't just program them to NOT eat them!"
Therefore, it's actually even worse than getting nothing. It's getting functionally nothing but the game files keep getting more bloated.
Mojang deserves every ounce of shit they get, for any reason.

For me it's 1.20.6. It's better than (You)r favorite version of minecraft (with a resource pack that replaces new music with c418 music). Tricky trials and everything after is very gay and ugly. Cave update is essential and basically a where minecraft was always headed. This is the final form and not much else is needed.

Notch at least put some thought into adding things. NuMojang literally has no creative direction because it's half Microsoft half Jeb (a tard). They actively hate part of the game's sandbox nature. Why else aren't there vertical slabs or slabs and stair versions of every blocks? Or how they release a new gimmick item and then leave it in the dust for years because it does literally nothing. Or make Elytras invalidate other forms of travel. Or add random made up mobs instead of more real life mobs? (But it's animal cruelty to let kids hit real life animals Mojang said!)

If they're not planning on regularly adding new content to Minecraft then they should make a new game. If they are going to add new content to Minecraft then it should be substantial and consistent.
Anything less says that they are either lazy or simply lack interest in continuing to develop the game. The latter is excusable, the former is not.
Even if it is the latter, that should mean that they find new people to continue development of the game. Obviously there is an interest in doing so, there are tens of thousands of mods for the game with new ones being made for free all the time. I find it hard to believe they don't have the money to form a new department.

the absolute best generation is pre-alpha and lacks any biomes/caves
alpha itself is quite good, the best mountain environments.
beta is more flattened but has its perks. b1.7.3 doesn't have sprinting. b1.8 does.
release 1.6 and below is generated as continents, huge fuck off oceans. long boat rides nostalgia.
release 1.7 and beyond is just a single mega continent, no real oceans anymore.

What Mojang should've done with the worldgen update in 1.7 was introduce the concept of continents with them having an increasing chance of becoming more exotic the further you traveled out
>1st/Spawn continent has typical worldgen (forests/plains/deserts)
>2nd continent is more flat and more likely to gen swamps around plains biomes
>3rd continent is more hilly and likely to gen forest hills, taiga, and extreme hills
>4th is more arid and likely to gen deserts and savannas
>5th is colder and gens cold taiga with ice plains sprinkled in
going further out generation should start to get a little crazier
>10th continent has giant taiga and ice plain spikes
>11th has bryce canyon like mesas and red sand deserts
>12th shattered savana plains and jungles
then it should just get wacky
>20th mushroom biomes
>25th are amplified variations of the first 5 examples
>30th classic/indev/alpha islands with the old fluorescent green grass
>50th should be a bunch of this >>716019150
>100th and beyond are farlands

this mod called worleys caves was very intriguing to me
it makes caves interconnected
however, it does not solve the problem of there still being alot of solid rock (the 'void' in the pic)
i think if you made some complex algorithm, you could make it generate additional cave systems that purposefully fill in that 'void' without rubbing up against the primary cave system
but yeah there is also something to be said about making your own mineshaft, rather than only spelunking

As someone that played Minecraft every few years since the beta days
The game is in the best state it's been and it's not even REMOTELY close

For technical players it's way better
For adventure players it's gotten so much better it's an actual game now
For builders it's gotten way better
For explorers it's gotten way better

The only people bitching about it are retards who want to be different by hating a good thing

I genuinely don't understand how it's possible for one of the biggest corporations in the world to pay an insane amount of money for the most popular videogame of all time and then do ABSOLUTELY FUCKING NOTHING with it. Just how is it possible for the Minecraft development team to be so fucking slow and ineffective? Just how is it possible for every fucking spinoff they've ever tried to have failed so miserably? Just how is it possible for the game to still have so much technical debt, and for the attempted rewrite of the game to have MORE technical debt than the original? It just doesn't seem possible. I need a serious explanation.

you could argue that b1.2 was the last good update, since b.13 added beds, which killed the game loop and smooth lightning, which taken away large portion of the game's soul, 1.8 was a shit update, but imo addition of the dragon was what really, finally killed the game. The dragon was the first time when there was a goal set not by the player, but by the game's designers, previosu to that, everything you did was out of your own initiative, now, wether you like it or not, wether you follow through or ignore it, the game has a goal, it has become finite and since then it is a dead pile of shit.

The debate about the right Minecraft version seems complicated. My oldest son is 7yo now and is getting really interested in Minecraft just through the school yard. At one point in the near future I'll have to get him access to an offline machine with it, I think. But what version should I get him (I'll just assume I can easily pirate all past ones)? While I was here, when Notch was posting aon /v/, I myself never got into Minecraft. A few months ago most anons seemed to prefer 1.12 or 1.13 I think. Here in this thread 1.6 seems to be liked the most. Should I get that one? What about mods?

While you're probably right, that he wants to talk with his friends about it, it's this weird intermediate period in elementary, where everything goes and (luckily) multiplayer is out of question on all sides. So I assume it will be a way more general talk about building stuff and it getting exploded by creepers. So an old, static version should be good enough for 2 or 3 years (He and his friends are absolutely fine with occasionally playing on my old SNES and N64. Having the newest shit doesn't seem to be so important right now). This should be a good time to get him used to a real computer also. I imagine it being pretty important before he gets into deeper contact with handhelds / tablets. So while >>716037256

Yeah. Minecraft in its baseform being more or less virtual Lego is a major appeal from my perspective as a parent. Even though I'm pretty wary about the whole scene surrounding Minecraft. But I really don't want him getting sucked into watching shitty youtube videos or streams. At least not too early (I expect the time frame around 14y - 16y, where my influence as a parent starts to wane seriously, so he needs to be 'online-ready' on his own by then). Ideally he would get his own internet access in the same time frame and not before. Though I'm wondering what the school will demand in a few years or how strong peer pressure will be on certain social media shit (my biggest concern desu).

I don't get why we never got grappling hooks, double jumps etc. like in Terraria. We already have all kinds of ruins/structures/temples in the game, just fill them with useful traversal items.

You get the elytra at the end and then have farms for rockets and put mending on it to even use it porperly.

It takes all the mystery and rarity out of digging the lowest levels to get the best ores and equipment. There's basically no incentive to actually mine, just look for a cave entrance then wander from shaft to chamber hoovering up diamonds. I remember striking diamonds or finding dungeons used to really excite me when I was younger because the caves were much more claustrophobic back then; now they're just like the overworld without the sun

Maybe I'm overcomplicating the whole thing. As I said, I've never played it. I just assumed from reading some updates, that it's much more multiplayer focused now (and maybe even other modern shit that flew over my head). It's pretty important for me, that it's fully offline without any kind of shop / ads. But maybe my fear is wholly unfounded and even the newer versions don't have that problem.

Not really.
It's still a single player game first and foremost if you just look at the mechanics.
One person can feasibly farm, build, explore, fight and mine. It goes a little faster if you have more people to fuck around with and it's definitely more fun with friends but so are most things in life.
At its core it's designed for single player.

Minecraft has mainly two versions, both available on pc:
Java is the classic one, the one trivial to pirate and moddable and still used by anybody who knows anything
Bedrock is the new version that's also on consoles, the whole game was re-written in C++ and in theory it runs smoother but it's also more closed off and it's the version that has microtransactions and shit
Basically just get the Java edition through any free (as in "doesn't require an account") launcher and you can have even the newest updates completely offline and completely devoid of microtransactions

some modders stick to old versions while some make shit only for the newest versions, and if that wasn't enough a lot of mods are exclusive to either forge or fabric, it's a pain in the ass and if the game had a final version and stopped receiving official updates the modding scene would be much better off

Notch genuinely believed the game didn't have DRM back then even though it blatantly did. He's an idiot.

>game that released as a completely finished product gets two post-release updates, usually QOL, a few fixes, or a small amount of additional content
>gamers bitch and whine that the dev abandoned it because they didn't keep rolling out free updates for eternity
>early access game "releases" after 8 years, half-finished, with "WORK-IN-PROGRESS" and "COMING SOON" labels plastered everywhere
>Overwhelmingly positive and zero complaints from gamers because the devs change a few variables every month to give the illusion of frequent updates
It boggles the fucking mind.

Dumb image. The adventure update / official release fucked with the game quite a bit, for better and worse.

People like you who demand more "content", ruined the game. Microsoft has been catering to you, and piling on villager factions and more structures that take away minecrafts sense of atmospheric uninhabited loneliness, and retarded abstract nothing mobs named shit like the schmoobly that clash with the skeletons and zombies and classic mobs in order to try to create more markettable plushies, they fucked up the combat so bad they never brought the uodate to consoles and said theyd fix it and everyone mods it out but microsoft never got around to it, they bloated the the sea so bad with shit the game has never performed as well since, they ruined the nether by making it hospitable and giving it vegetation and npcs and taking away the horrific meat block texture that made it truly feel like hell and cluttered it with mobs and shit that take away from the simple battle with ghasts and the fucked up terrain that it used to be, and the cave update was horrendous, the giant pits means you get ore way too fast, but the constant waterfalls make it a slog to trek through, and the vast excessively wide open spaces underground mean you get absolutely swarmed by mobs, it all feels like shit.

The game didnt need more content after release 1.5 ish, players just needed to be more creative with what was already in it. Its a sandbox game, it isnt meant to be a linear action game or an mmo / live service game, stop treating it like one.

the scale here is somewhat deceiving
the oceans in 1.6 were on a cosmic scale, it's just tens of thousands of blocks of nothing but flat water
it's interesting in concept but offers nothing in practice
this map of the current version has a decently sized ocean and tons of rivers
because of real-world maps your brain is tricking you into think this isn't an ocean and is instead a small lake but this "lake" is over 4200 blocks wide and 3100 tall
it would take you almost 9 real-time minutes to sail from one end of this to the other
in my opinion that's big enough that it feels absolutely massive but isn't so big that it's borderline impassable
obviously there are bigger oceans, this is just one from a seed i used to play on

really huge oceans would make more sense if there was more to navigation than holding W, but without waves and other shit that wouldn't fit minecraft in the first place that's not a part of the game worth expanding much upon (although custom-buildable ships would be really cool)

>modpacks are diabolically overcomplicated to make
They're not. You see something you like, you add it to a folder that becomes your pack. It's that simple. No, you don't need to add every mod you see, just a few handful. You start small and stay moderately small. And you don't take any premade modpacks either.
