I generally don't hold any reservations towards the Japanese themselves so much as the Imperial Japanese military. Really, in a way the citizens of Japan were victims in their own way. The IJA was spreading around some seriously fucked up propaganda basically telling civilians they should kill themselves if Americans manage to get boots on Japanese soil because of the horrific things they'll do to them. In WWII in Color there's an account from a US marine who witnessed a woman throw her child off a cliff before he could stop her, thoroughly convinced the US troops were going to tear through the place raping and murdering in sight and it was the only act of mercy she could do for her child. Basically went catatonic when they brought her to an area where they were feeding Japanese civilians as the realization of what she'd done hit.
