Literally only Fontaine was the problem, and he was a career criminal on the surface before he ever came to Rapture

Whether or not it's realistic, if you killed him ASAP when he started getting uppity, the city wouldn't have failed

Rapture is such a stupid idea. It's cool, but it's not even that cool because you could not convince most human beings to ever want to live in a place like that, even with all the human freedoms in the world. These were all wealthy industrialists too. Yeah I'd much rather live in 24/7 underwater darkness in a confined freezing city with limited escape routes, than fuck whores and do cocaine in my 1940s penthouse overlooking NYC.

One of the biggest reasons Ryan, and others took to living in Rapture, is because they feared global nuclear war. It was intentionally a breakaway/contingency civilization in response to the atomic bomb, first, and an objectivist paradise, second.

It was Fontaine plus Adam. Yeah, there were some cracks when they imported famous tennis players and had them cleaning up dirty bathrooms, but that was manageable. They just needed a source of manual labor rather than yet another intellectual/athlete. Adam however made people into crazy addicts and Fontaine got rich off of the trash fire.

this guy (>>716021846) is actually right. In one of the dev interviews with dorito pope, levine outright says the idea of putting the game in an enclosed space came first. Since they just came fresh off of making System Shock 2, they didn't want to put it in a spaceship. One of the environment designers suggested an underwater city and the teamliked the idea, but had no justification for why it would be there. Levine was reading fountainhead at the time and blurted something about egomaniacal rich people forming a refuge away from the masses and everyone just went with it. I was surprised how honest he was that the whole objectivism thing was a backhanded solution to a design problem with no actual interest to explore the themes at first

The civil war in the city was mainly a distraction for people from the main problem which is the epidemic use of ADAM. It wasn't the shooting and explosions that did the city in it was that a major portion of the populace had a genetic cancer driving them insane overtime, and that insidious problem went unnoticed or unchecked for too long when the shooting and explosions were much more pressing for people's attention.

You're talking about two different things. Just because Levine didn't opt to explore the philosophical depths of objectivism (probably because he's too stupid), doesn't mean a coherent and rational story isn't able to be provided. It's very obviously a case of >>716021846 didn't play the game or wasn't paying attention. Didn't understand it and then handwaves it all. By the time it was becoming clear that ADAM was an existential problem, the civil war was in full swing and the bigger and more "explosive" focus. A more pragmatic leader would have done something but Ryan had his own characterized reasons to take the war personally (his ideology VS Atlas's) hence his reduced focus on the true danger

The thing about Rapture that baffles me is nobody there really expected blue collar jobs to not exist. Like what the fuck do you think is going to happen, the pipes, electrical, engineering work will fix itself? There was an audio log that made mention of the pipes always freezing for example, does some rich actor or materialistic slut think it fixes itself with magic? Well shit with Adam maybe it can but even then its a big city. Ryan proposes this whole idyllic world of eternal prosperity not realizing how societies even work. And if Fontaine didnt come along someone else would have.

Hephaestus is full of people doing that work. What Mcdonagh is saying is no different than our current world.
A plastic surgeon isn't going to think about heating water to avoid freezing pipes. He calls the plumber if need be.
Some workers, like Peach were disappointed, others were just doing their job, I forget his name but I'm thinking of somebody specific. No different than our world.
Rapture fell because of ADAM (magic) and Ryan's panic causing him to betray his ideals.

>The thing about Rapture that baffles me is nobody there really expected blue collar jobs to not exist.

No not really. In fact there's a lesser but still definite focus upon the situation of blue collar and lower class people in the city. It's not a great life compared to the high class luxury living, but a lot of the blue collar and poorly people are still proud and happy to be able to just live in Rapture, and so are willing to put in the hard work to sustain it. In fact, that one guy in the BS2 multi shows a choice example where, his lot in life isn't great in Rapture but he's so proud to basically keep the city alive that he settles for a smaller slice of the pie. And there's indication that he isn't alone in this mindset.

The problem is when Rapture became not a fantastical place to live, with the civil war, that the lower class people stopped valuing the sacrifice.

A single leak would be enough to cave the whole system implosion style in just a few hours.

So it begs the question, did the leaks just start a few minutes before you came into the city?
Or are the leaks completely unrelated to the structurally integrity and are just random water pipes.

IIRC it's basically a board of some size, say 10, and to have a seat on the board means you're of the top 10 highest earning/producing companies in the city. And collectively they debate and vote on governance and measures

What was his plan anyways? Ya see at first I figured he was gonna take some cool tech they invented in Rapture, sell it and live the high life up above, but then he decided to turn himself into some sort of roided up hulk so...did he intend on becoming like a King of the Crackheads or something?

At first he just simply wanted to take control of Rapture. Then unexpectedly, his plan to kill Jack off didn't work and Jack came gunning for him, so in an emergency hail mary gambit, he started splicing up to an absurd degree. Notably he does tell you that he never touched ADAM before that moment.

And in the process of splicing up in an effort to fight back against Jack, he didn't plan on splicing and ADAM feeling and experiencing like ultra-heroin. After that, his (insane) plan is to basically just turn Rapture into an ADAM farm to siphon all of it into him. He probably would have ended up like Alex the Great, in BS2 eventually. Just some massive ADAM blobster.

On like a giant train or a ship? Something like Snowpiercer

Within someone(s) mind, like a mentalscape city? Something like Inception

A miniaturized space, like a city in a snowglobe, but there's portions where you're in the normal world and tiny?

A normal city but you can travel backwards and forwards in time, and the city is appropriately different in layout and design based on the time period?

Who knows...

Yeah the city is deliberately flawed. Andrew Ryan literally ignored his own principles of "letting people be" because he wanted power and control and the system was abused by a different person who is essentially a conman.

In that one specific example though, that con man very probably would have run the city into the ground. If the city faced some live-or-die tier threat then principles should have been put on pause.

For the very poor yes, but for low class and blue collar shlubs it was better than the surface, apart from the inherent differences like lack of space and sunlight.

I don't think I've seen any of that when I played, but the last time I played Bioshock was around 4 years ago and Bioshock 2 even longer ago. Do they talk about it in the audio logs or is it like "honey I am writing to the surface after I have just arrived to Rapture it's such a nice city and the sights are something to behold"

All we have to go on are audio diaries since basically all of the games are post-war, but the average joe shmoes seem decently content to happy. There's things to complain about, but the fruits of Rapture exceed anything on the surface because of the concentration of talent and advanced science/tech. It is undoubtedly and unfairly stacked in favor of the upper class who live incredible lives of luxury, but even the scraps the low class get are some amazing things.

We could also look to Burial at Sea, if we're masochistic enough, but it shows functioning Rapture and even in "average" areas of the city the place is pretty grand and high living for the common man compared to the surface. Maybe unrealistically so, but then it's a fictional setting.

>honey I am writing to the surface after I have just arrived to Rapture

There's definitely a few audio diaries which directly compare life with the surface, from the perspective of a working class person. Some negative, some positive, so we can't just blanket assume Rapture was a miserable place for everyone except the upper class.

It feels like people only remember the bitching and moaning of characters from the Fisheries in 1 and Pauper's Drop in 2 and assume that's what all life is like for all the poors in the city. This is dumb because both of those areas are extreme examples. Pauper's Drop being the absolute lowest of the low which is undeniably a shitty place to be yet is basically a homeless camp, and the Fisheries being stacked with disgruntled toadies who Fontaine intentionally riled up and enticed to crime.
