it’s the type of game I wanted to make when I was 15. an rpg maker undertale clone with barely any gameplay that tries to be deep and emotional but also charming and funny but ends up just being cringe.

I don't like him and I think the game is mediocre at best, but I feel like some of the videos critiquing his code are incredibly nit-picky.

Like the one where they act like clearing these alarms one-by-one instead of using a loop is the end of the world. It makes zero fucking difference. He wrote it in the way that is the easiest for him to read and there is absolutely zero performance difference in doing it this way. Going back and changing this is pointless.

It is nitpicky and his code is largely fine in terms of doing what it's supposed to.
But pretty much every line of code he writes would be flagged in a code review, his style is extremely weird for someone that presents himself as god tier game dev. It's basically proof that he never wrote a single line of code at blizzard (we already knew that but now it's reinforced)

the music is actually pretty good, and some of the assets convincingly hit an earthbound/secret of mana vibe.
but the writing is just pure juvenile nothingness. dude should have had the good sense to let a competent writer take a pass at the script and look at the plot structure. but instead he came up with this "choose your own adventure" gimmick thinking it could salvage the lackluster story, i guess, while giving him cover to work within the same levels for years. unfortunately there's a reason why much larger teams have to streamline their "player choices" to the point they're often not even satisfying--they take loads of work and most players won't even see most of it unless you build in a flow chart. and if the player isn't invested in the story to begin with, it's obv not worth all the extra effort
the sad part is it's too late to scrap the idea since the whole game is strung together with spaghetti code built around it. so it's just destined to be this unfinished messy teen angst project made by a grown man who presumably took too much adderall and thought he was a god designer
