>dude, dude it's crazy how mgs2 predicted the future dude
Are people really serious about this shit or just memeing? All these themes had already been thoroughly explored in literature by the mgs2 came out. Mgs2 pretty much fits in the zeitgeist of the 90s engaging with topics and concerns that people were debating that time and it honestly has nothing unique to say.

the funniest thing in the MGS games to me is they have smart guns, which dems have been trying to push on Americans since the early 90s, and everyone fucking refuses to ever buy them

i think the reason it impresses people is that the themes were explored in a videogame and that it came out in 2001 on top of it. it wasnt a film or a book. If the message was conveyed in a movie or a book many people never would have watched it or read it, but exploring the themes in a videogame was unprecedented for the most part outside of a handful of other games. it also combined a lot of separate talking points into one package. so it was good for getting people to think about some stuff they may not have otherwise or much earlier. today i dont think they would do it for one reason or another. cant explain why just my gut feeling that a lot of the topics would hit to close to home today and somebody would say no we cant put this stuff in for whatever reason.

It's not a meme sadly. Hideo Kojima has a cult-like fanbase that think a cinematic experience with political commentary is evolving the video game medium.

the echo chamber shit was also pretty ahead of its time i think, because social media was still in a much more primitive light hearted form that just didnt have much arguing period. im sure in the early 2000s and the late 90s people were arguing about shit on forums and such, but the entire concept of people retreating into safe zones where they and other people have all the same opinions was ahead of its time and prophetic because i dont really see that as a thing that happened much back then. surely not to anywhere the same intensity as today in any case

maybe his inspiration was the japanese version of this website, may not even have been around when mgs2 was in development.

My apologies, I assume everyone is aware of the two sites created specifically to shitpost this site to death.
One of the two is called "The Sharty". They are the ones behind all the basedjak edits and the numerous off-topic "IS COFFEE GOOD FOR YOU" and "[sad news]" threads.
They originated from the /qa/ board that Hiroshimoot and the mods mishandles so badly, it attracted an incredible amount of third-worlders to it (which have now moved to the sharty).

The "echo chamber" bit is distinct from the "creating context" bit. People often conflate the SSS with the short tangent concerning echo chambers because people see what they want to see.

The SSS warns of a new dark age brought about by a deluge of information, most of which is trash (which isn't new),
and much of which is basically kept alive in perpetuity by the nature of the digital world (something relatively new at the time).
It explicitly states that the difficulty by which we need to wade through this trash to access anything of real import, meaning, or factuality, is something that threatens to doom all of civilization.
People kept (and still keep) saying how great the internet is as a means of facilitating information accessibility.
"Information accessibility", people often argue, "is inherently good".
The SSS claims otherwise, and says that we need something to curate - to weed out the trash, to filter out the noise - to "create context", lest we drown in information.

This is arguably something most people don't talk about, because people don't want to stop pretending to forget that they're deliberately drowning themselves in information every day.

Why would one person making the same prediction after another make the prediction false or invalid?
Or are you saying that someone who played the video game should've instead read the literature instead or before?
If so, why?

Likewise. The responses I make are mostly me throwing out a message in a bottle in the hopes that another person receives it.
It's not too uncommon for the same people behind the shitposts to pretend to understand while undermining the message through being obtuse, so I'm glad I managed to inform at least one person.

Name one (1) other piece of fiction that came before MGS2 that incorporated filter bubbles, the internet as a form of information control, the role of AI, rapid accumulation of junk data, and the transfer of power from governments to whoever has their hand on the tap of the internet. Other things may have tapped on indiviudal elements there, but I don't think you'll be able to name anything that did it all in one package, made it relevant to the plot, and came immediately post 9/11 when this all got set in motion properly

it didn't predict the future, it specifically foreshadowed the sorry state of the internet before it happened. the internet went from a novel and interesting town square where creators and schizos alike could rant about anything and create content to a sanitized corporate owned shopping center where you go to have rich asshole shill products that you don't need at you 24/7 by influencing what is seen via algorithmic meddling and paid sponsorships. the internet replaced the mall. the internet is just a digital mall, and we're all mallrats.

the internet is dead, a husk of its former self, and the description of what it has become, made by the patriot AI, is pretty spot on.

the social commentary was pretty spot on as well, definitely not a unique take, but the bits about political discourse breaking down because people could isolate themselves in their own information space for the first time.
The last 10 years have shown how truth has become meaningless and the fundamentals facts we take for granted are really just a ripple of public consciousness which is easier to manipulate than at any time in history on a macro scale
