Yep. Turns out a lot of the monster roster in Doom 1 and 2 can easily be outsmarted just by playing against the way they were designed.

It's fucked up how the Revenant's design is like taking the roboflops concept from Robocop 2 but made with the intent to have a former human stripped down to its bones as a writhing demon whose every second of unlife is endless pain and all it can do is scream. Yet his sprites look like he's a jolly fucking boner, nevermind that the Doom community thinks of revs as fucking comedy monsters you use for ultra shitpost fights like pick up a key, suddenly 100 boners surround you and make that stupid face

That's just how Doom ends up being portrayed.
There's a clear horror edge to it but the fast gameplay, cheesy graphics and sound take away from it. Even with something like Doom 64 or 3 taking a more edgy tone.

Makes me wonder how would Doom 64's redesigns for the cut monsters (revenant, archvile and spidermastermind) would've looked like given that D64 made enemies a lot grittier and detailed like the Cacodemon and HK/Baron guts looked damn grotesque compared to doom2

There's a mod that converts Doom 1 and 2 to look more like 64 (also works with custom wads.)
It's pretty neat and makes use of what we do have for reference regarding the cut monsters.

Pretty decent expansion, though it's best quality is just having good map design as that's all it has to offer. It doesn't even use the final doom textures as far as i know

You will learn to hate and understand why Chaingunners sit on the same tier of threat level as a Cyberdemon through this wad. Inconsistent quality in terms of level design, carried mostly by its music. Plutonia takes the difficulty to its extreme (at the time at least), Play Final doom only if you feel like becoming a man

Pretty good, even if i'm still miffed at how it rips off megawads made by the community. The entire thing feels like a ''what if Scythe 2 was an official expansion for doom'', down to ripping off Scythe 2's map 16.
Stupid hard though, it's head to head with Plutonia, but unlike Plutonia, the difficulty is not due to bullshit.

I liked No Rest. It's a breezy 9 levels I was surprised it was over when it was over.

Legacy of Rust does a lot of cool things since it doesn't have to work around limitations of the old engine so it can comfortably work in new monsters and weapons. The levels themselves are pretty great even if its coolest visual trick is done in the first level. It's built with the assumption you know how to play Doom and will escalate combat setpieces pretty rapidly.

I'm still bummed out that legacy of rust had the ghouls, which are doom alpha's lost souls but actually fun because they're not hitscan, but just uv-fast cacos, but didn't opt to restore the spider mastermind's psychic attack or find a way to give her a second attack to make her a lot less of a damn worthless monster. The fact that a downscaled arachnotron sized mastermind (Mind weaver) is 100 times more threatening and powerful than the actual final boss of doom 1 really shows how much of a fucking flop this monster is.

I had a fucked up idea for a doom monster, i call it the plutonian triad.
A revenant made with the skeleton of an archvile that resurrects dead enemies by turning them into revenants and has the chaingunner's chainguns on his shoulders
A chaingunner who fires revenant missiles continuously and has a melee attack that's a super berserk ayylmao punch that is 1:1 to getting zapped by an archvile
And an archvile with a chaingun amplified by its devil magic and rather than resurrecting monsters, it turns corpses into 4 homing revenant rockets

All 3 walk as fast as an archvile btw

SIGIL 1 and 2 are fun but get kind of brutal. Romero leaned hard on this one gimmick throughout both where you shoot the eyeball icon (and it's usually very difficult to see from all but 1 angle) so keep an EYE out for those.

Yeah, Legacy of Rust definitely gets points for ambition. I thought the pacing was tight, encounters got real creative past map 3, and the custom monsters didn't feel like cheap GZDoom fluff for once. Only gripe is that it kinda peaks early like you said-still, better than the million "hallway >> slaughter map" wads floating around. The tone shift in the last few maps was actually kinda Romero-esque, in a good way. Worth the play.

Except for anything made by Slipseer. Even if you ignore their shitty politics and crybullying the legends and old talent out of the community, they just try and make Doom wad style maps every time. Full on clusterfucks with hundreds of monsters in small areas, fuck off with that.
Arcane Dimensions and Alkaline have hundreds of monsters too, but that's because the maps are huge so the pacing is actually good.
