Far Cry 2 was one of the only brown n bloom games that should actually be brown n bloom

Far Cry 2 is a contrarians dream game, it's a piece of shit with TERRIBLE gameplay design that they act like "no one else gets" and think it's deep because a arms dealers tries to get philosophical (and fails)

the diamond hunting is boring and tedious
the healing system using a long animation is frustrating, especially because it only happens when you take extreme damage, AKA it only happens at the times WHEN YOU WANT TO HEAL FAST
the enemies are ridiculous bullet sponges considering they are malnourished Africans wearing wifebeater vests
the gun degradation system is annoying and nonsensical because it ONLY affects players, enemies can fire their guns non-stop with no issues, yet the moment you pick up their gun it has 2 bullets and is a rusted piece of shit that will explode in your hands before it even fires those 2 bullets, and this is the case REGARDLESS of if the enemy used their gun on your or if you snuck up on them and killed them silently with no fight beforehand
the respawning checkpoints are retarded because they respawn WAY TOO FAST, you could go clear a checkpoint completely silently with no alarms and no witnesses then go do a mission just down the road for 5 minutes, but by the time you come back the entire checkpoint would have been repsawned with enemies just chilling there BEFORE THE CORPSES OF THE OLD ONE HAVE EVEN DISAPPEARED
The game uses a fucking flimsy reason to explain all of the combat with factions you are working for by the leader saying "we can't tell our men that we hired you, so you have to kill them if you encounter them!" because they couldn't be bothered to code in a proper allegiance system for the AI, even though it makes no sense that the leaders are fine with you killing their forces, which will weaken them drastically

It's the most immersive one, there is barely a hud and to look at the map you literally pull out a physical map and gps. Even the pause screen is your character's journal. The game gives you so much freedom, where there will be an objective to kill someone or blow something up, and you can use whatever methods or weapons to achieve it. You only get a game over if you die and even then, your buddy can come a rescue you. The next game Far Cry 3 will give you a game over for walking 2 steps in the wrong direction and wont let you parachute into an enemy base because they want you to enter through the sewer instead, its gay as fuck.

finally an actual response, whilst I do agree that the immersive features are good, to me they simply serve as set dressing over the top of a flawed foundation; however I do disagree on the freedom point, because that's like saying Duke Nukem 3D gives you freedom because you can kill the battlelord with either the devestator or by exploding pipebombs as he walks over them, you're still doing the same thing, just with a different tool to do so
I think everything Far Cry 2 tries to do was done better in STALKER, with the only exception being that FC2 has you shoot black people for the entire game, which is probably why people on /v/ think it's an "underrated masterpiece"

Maybe a temporary allegiance system would've been nice on a per-mission basis but it was definitely a point the game was trying to make that it really didn't matter who you were killing or why or what difference there is between this guy and the other guy because shit's fucked.
Honestly for all the gameplay shortcomings I think the game as a whole does a really good job of getting across that you're just a merc in a completely fucked, ultimately pointless war and if you're not going to turn into a mindless killer then there's just no place for you.

This is one of the biggest self-reports of sucking I've ever seen. Oh no, you can't just Rambo-run out in the open and use an insta full-heal every time you take critical damage. Boo hoo, you have to play a little tactically and use cover while managing threats. It's almost like it's a shooter game or something.

It has medkits and savepoints glued to the walls but also vaulting and auto-cover mechanics yet jumping through a window requires crouch-jumping with the machete having no takedown animations.

Halo is another example but I remember that being pretty reasonable.

No, it's just a cool and unique game. It is fun, but has one major drawback with the retarded enemy spawning system. All camps get refreshed basically as soon as you leave, and enemy vehicles endlessly spawn on the roads. A mod that fixes that while playing on the hardest difficulty would be an excellent experience. Again just those issues alone make the game annoying to play, but literally everything else is great.
