VI wasn't made by a Ubisoft studio and neither was VII, both were outsourced. VI was made by a fairly competent developer but Ubisoft didn't know what they wanted out of the game and kept changing the design documents all the time. This led to the studio bankrupting itself trying to make the best out of what they were given. VII was made by a bunch of yesterday's students in Germany on a shoestring budget.
In contrast, VIII seems to be made by a studio that approached Ubisoft themselves for a permission to use the IP.

It's probably not the kind you want, you play as a girl and can fuck a werewolf (male), and I think a necromancer (female) and maybe a zombie too. My memories if this games are foggy, it's very forgettable, I only remember the werewolf because it's so random. You as the character are stuck in a magical prison labyrinth but then there's a dialogue choice to just do it right there with a beast you just met? I clicked it just out of curiosity.

It's ok if you want to play it for the campaign and to have general context of the story, game world and general design of the series and why certain things are the st they are in 2. But be advised, D1 is a very simplistic game, there's only so much you can do in terms of party builds. The music is very ballin though. Also one of the most soulful main menus ever. Also better unit portraits.
Before you play, download Verokster's wrapper, it works for both 1 and 2 and makes running them infinitely more pleasant on modern machines

I want to think Olden Era is going to be good, it has so so so many callbacks to HOMM3, but THE FUCKING ART STYLE ruins it. It's some World of Warcraft inspired gay bling style where even the lowest peasant in a fucking medieval army has a pitchfork with intricate golden accents and luxurious handlebars, and higher tier monsters look like Final Fantasy endbosses. Every single menu item is stupidly overdesigned as well.

People are calling it mobile tier art and for a reason.

4 is considered by many to be the worst out of NWC (the original devs) heroes. Mostly because of combination of being horribly unfinished (their publisher went bankrupt) while also trying many new ideas at the same time. Do give the others a try, 2, 3 and 5 are very good.

HOMM4 was an aborted mmorpg style abomination, but they ran out of money to finish it so they rushed up a HOMM3 sequel out of it. It has some interesting concepts but it plays a lot different from every other HOMM game. If that's the only game you played, you'll find the other ones strange since 1-3 followed exactly the same gameplay logic, each sequel just added more content, to the point where HOMM3 with its expansions had hundreds of everything. HOMM4 then totally changed everything. HOMM5 tried to go back to 3 and take only 1-2 good things from 4 and add one or two neat things of its own.

You should play 3 or 2. 3 with expansions is absolutely fucking stellar, 2 has the music and art style going for it but it feels a lot more constrained after 3.

Based, IV is my favorite and I started with HoMM I.
Game is super janky but being able to finally use your Hero in combat was worth it.
If unit upgrades were added to the game it would be 9/10.
Also nerf the vampires.
