its really good for pirating, with just plug and play installs you can have what is essentially a free appstore for every pkg file on the system itself and for everything else you can filezilla over iso files. Ontop of that you can boot a game, block syscalls and then log into your PSN account to earn trophies as if you owned the game.
And as others mentioned there are a bunch of games still locked on there, a lot of them a lot of people missed because for the early part of that gen xbox was king, so ive never played say killzone, resistance or the uncharted games.

My PS3 is mostly used as a Gran Turismo box, when it's not being used as a blu ray/DVD player. I've got no interest in picking up a PS5 just for 7 and my PS4 is an unreliable piece of junk. Never really got into the exclusives. Played through MGR but the constant stop-start nature of the gameplay put me off from touching it again. What was the obsession with movie games around this era? Nobody wants to sit there watching a cutscene when playing a video game. If I want to watch a film, I'll watch a fucking film.

Everything else is better on another platform. Though I do like quincunx, it is superior aa. RDR, while degenerate surely looks better on PS3, I havent played child rape aka turn Aboriginals into niggers aka GTA V , but same for that too. NVIDIA was good once upon a time. Blurry AA is special sauce.

Some performance issues aren't worth it, eg GRAW 2 is a lesser game on PS3 than on 360. And worse textures are a heavy cost.

Bad specs. Should have used the 3x more powerful 8800gtx ultra, but NVIDIA were assholes at all times. Greedy gook scum. With no regard for others. No investment in improving others, saving kids from low standards and uninspired imagination. Ching Chong cancer that has done it's best to destroy the world.

Low res and better hardware could have gotten the lies playable. Especially with my/obvious tweaks. Perforated frames, repeated that enough but why not waste time and words, previous and guessed pixels in a frame, many frames required for a full one, motion blur effect. Bam! Hundreds of times more performance. Fuck 360's avatar shit was stupid. Home wasn't.

Instead of all performance on characters. Characters free. Sprites. And as complex as artists can make. USB sticks for the gigabytes required for all frames of animation at all seen angles. Blur fine for missing and motion. Guesswork again. A lot of them and culling again can make world better. Assure framerate and world complexity by life in world. Sprites coming and going. Weather, fog, action. Only action in detail maybe or opposite. Focus attention on what is well done. Train players not to take in unnecessary shit.

I'm wondering this too, I play cod on ps3 sometimes and there's at least only a 300-400 people on at peak times, and that the most popular game from back then that's still online, for every other online game the population so small you pretty much have to join a discord group and play during events. Im an active ps3 user. Granted, I dont play much as I used to, but im still looking forward to finish all the exclusive games from this console. Not rushing it though.
What I do with my ps3 these days is to have it play music, but mostly watch old anime/TV series on it.
I have recently finished watching the Sopranos on my ps3, and now I have started watching Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood.
Its getting a bit hard to pirate videos with old video codecs these days so I might have to move on sooner or later, but watching stuff on ps3 is still comfy as fuck.

I play mw3 and black ops 1, I rarely see hackers desu on 360 mw2 they are pretty common though. The reason why you can't rank up in black ops 1 is because you're playing on an account made after 2018, have an older account but you've changed your psn name, or if you also have an old account but never started up cod multiplayer before 2018. It's a glitch with the activision servers that's unique to ps3, on mw3 you can't even get into a match if you've done any of the above.

I think I can find fat ps4s in the same price range with a CFW-compatible ps3, but I still think ps3 is alive because just like ps vita, both have a very robust CFW that is very appealing to retro gamers. Also, there is the nostalgia factor as well.
Ps3s and Vitas are easy to hack, you can expand their storage and dump lots of games in them, and the CFW also allows you to stay online with zero issues and penalties since Sony doesnt give a fuck. Slim ps3 consoles gain a limited PS2 back comp as well.

I think ps3 is able to play modern video codecs, judging from my experience with the "Welcome to NHK" anime. Its the only anime from my anime collection that is h265 and somehow it runs well on my ps3. Movian needs some extra time to buffer at first, but after that the episode plays without slowdowns.
I'd say its possible to make it play h265 and AV1 but the Ps3 hacking scene is dying. Some big players like EvilNat are still active to update their CFW, but you dont see new stuff happening with ps3 anymore.
Everyone who knows how to code and wants to experiment, has moved on to ps vita because porting games has become more possible than ever there. The vita community is very active and even puts out money prizes for ports. Recently vita got the OoT harkinian ported. It was being considered as "impossible" for a long time, but here were are.

It is very rough without acceleration. Even some modern phones struggle with it. 19 years old PS3 is much weaker than those so it is a tall order. Better H265 should be doable I think but as you said no one really bother anymore.
