As for bananza my initial thoughts when playing were that another 2d game would have been immediately more enjoyable. It does have some neat ideas that I enjoyed but it is kinda a constant fight against the inherently bad botw design. Luckily the game is short enough that it doesn't become too much of a chore.

Odyssey got a lot of shit for the moons just being in open spaces but more often than not there was at the very least a little platforming challenge or something to reach it. I feel like 90% of the bananas are just mash Y through a wall.

Honestly I feel like the process of scanning the environment to decipher an object's composition really only works in the 3D games, since environmental immersion is a big part of Prime's shtick (since they can also integrate the use of materials that you scan into some semblance of environmental storytelling if they tie the material used with why it's found where it is).

Besides they kind of did that with the X-Ray Scope in Super. It'd be much the same if they removed the icon blocks to replace them with a way to discern how to blow things up from the environmental cue itself.

Fine, you want an actual complaint: the way you explore the environment detracts from the enjoyment of uncovering new secrets, even if the actual discovery of said secrets has an addictive element to it.

In a Mario game you are somersaulting, wall jumping, and a ton of other things to traverse the environment and find new shit that is tucked away and required a measure of ingenuity to find. DK Bananza has that but it so often takes the form of "try smashing this piece of scenery". It's just smashing continuously and not frequently enough testing the players' other capabilities to uncover a new secret. They do happen but at least as far as I've gotten the rudimentary gameplay loop fluctuates between an addition to finding hidden items and being nearly bored out of my mind just punching stuff to look for those secrets.

I agree, but only because I'm a god gamer who was able to pick up and understand the game's mechanics so quickly. I've been looking at how other people play through the game and most of them never understood you could topple bosses over by exploiting their weak points or taking advantage of the environment.
Even near the end of the game they introduce a couple new mechanics at you, which you're supposed to apply to the final bosses, but for some reason that just flew over most people's heads and instead they try to brute force a win.

I was 16 when the first NSMB game came out, i fell for the hype, bought it, played it and then i was like "was that really it? that was super short and way too easy and kind of ugly" and put it away and didn't touch it ever again. I lost all interest in Mario after that, i tried mario galaxy a bit later and hated it too, maybe in part due to the bad taste in my mouth that NSMB left but also because i think it's just not that good.
