Marika's Soreseal is at the end of the fucking game, so it isn't even a solution. The Scarseal only gives you a few points, so it isn't a solution for anyone with low Faith in the first place.

The issue here is that most 'undead' things don't have that happen.
The skeletons don't get killed by healing, but are harmed by Holy.
Revenants tank Holy damage, but are killed by healing.
This is despite Revenants using Deathblight colors for their particle effects and being summoned by the Tibia Mariner in the DLC. Showing that they're supposedly linked together.

I literally did this but never bothered to use this knowledge because I had figured them out by then.

I play these games blind on my first playthrough and only open a wiki at the end to see what I missed. Of course I missed a lot of questline steps because Fromsoft but in terms of items and places I was extremely thorough.

I know there are already a lot of interesting mechanics we can do that with, but it could be better, that's all; I'm especially not a fan of having to read a fucking wiki every time I need to decide what weapons to use against a boss when I get tired of hitting my head against a wall, for instance

I imagine that Revenants weren't actually connected to the Skeletons at all until way later in development.
Because they don't appear anywhere close to the Skeletons or Godwyn anywhere in the base game. And the particle effects are arbitrary.
There's a reverse of this with the Misbeggotten, that used to be connected to Radagon, but then had that cut out later on. Its why that one in the Snowfields has the golden sword.

So they had the Revenant enemy around, a fucked up corpse zombie, and then just stapled it to the 'Those Who Live in Death' faction in a really sloppy way that leads to two parts of the faction having completely different interactions.
The Wormfaces are similar. They tank Holy damage, use Deathblight, but then also have no connection to Godwyn or the Skeletons in the base game.
These games seemingly are always totally overhauled like 1 month before release and everything gets shuffled around like crazy.

I'm on my first playthrough and I've been fucking everything up with just a sacred katana, a brass shield, and a shortbow. Maybe the occasional fire pot. Is there anything in the game I can't beat with this combo?

Most bosses and tough enemies have heavy Holy resist as the game goes on. If you can jump to a different type of bonus damage, I'd recommend it.
The Brass Shield is the best early game shield, so good move there.
Throwing knives are also great to cheaply stock up on for a Katana build, because tossing one every few seconds during a lull in the fight prevents a boss from resetting its poise.

This guy gave me the toughest time out of anybody I fought. Once I started to memorize his patterns to dodge roll through most of his attacks, I felt far less cheated with every subsequent death. He still got me occasionally with the earth shatter move or that damn tail attack, but eventually I kicked his ass. I'm just glad the evergaol is in a very convenient place to just collect your runes and refight right away.
Fought Godrick shortly after and he went down like a sack of potatoes in comparison.

They're so tanky that even Ambush Shard, the game's included shield counter, does nothing.
I almost always deal with them by sniping from a distance with Loretta's bow spell. And if I can't do that, I just give up and accept that whatever they're guarding is not for me.

Anyone else remap their attack keys? I have light attack set to X, heavy attack set to Y, and dodge roll set to A, while my interact button is R2 and item button is R1. Left handed actions are the same.

lmb light righthand attack, rmb heavy righthand attack
shift light lefthand attack, alt heavy lefthand(ash)
space for dodge, f for jump.
I don't remember what else is different. Nightreign made me make some new adjustments, too, now that you need a separate heal/item button and got the surge spring as well as the skill and art buttons.

there's a few places where hornset say marika "betrayed" them, which people take to mean marika herself was somehow elevated in their society above being jar-soup
its never explained why or how this occurs but there are a few spots in the game where its clear the shamans were not just KOS for the hornsent so it does seem rather intentional

Combining bodies together basically spontaneously gets someone closer to divinity in this setting. Rykard being filled with 1000 corpses isn't just about him eating people, but combining that many bodies together makes the controller more godly on its own. The same stuff happens with the Godskins wearing the skins of dozens of people. Or Godrick's grafting.
The Hornsent Jars are another example of this. They probably aggregated her with at least a dozen villagers and in doing so made a new woman that was closer to Godhood, a manufactured Empyrean. This was probably helped by Marika being of the Numen ethnicity, who are some weird spiritual beings that can merge or split their own flesh apart.
The Hornsent then made giant gates that were themselves made of a million more corpses and this again actually created a close connection with the setting's divine power. And at this location, Marika was able to commune with the Two Fingers and be ascended to a true God.

It also looks like she killed everyone even before entering the gates, so she was already extremely powerful as an Empyrean before then.

Ostensibly the Hornsent wanted her to be their God, and probably had an Elden Lord of their own they wanted to appoint as her partner/controller.
But somehow they didn't foresee that the girl they butchered the family of, would still be resentful of them when she gained the power of a God.
