There's surprisingly not enough Rom Hacks for the series. I've always been wanting something where you can just go through the entire game as a boss of your choice. Overworld sprites could be improvised if missing, as long as someone could program it well.

I know there's 4.5 and I adore it for that, but it doesn't have all the Navis. Back in the day someone made a Falzar hack for 6 but I have no idea if he controls the moves or it just plays by itself:

But yeah I'd love a BN romhack. My idea for a new BN game was always Lan and Mega slightly older - high school or university, and edgier. Maybe scilab has a faction that goss out of control and builds a spyware virus that goes into people's homepages and corrupts their navis. And you fight corrupted versions of lots of popular navis. Yai gets hotter and you get a Glyde encounter. I would love for a new game to have multiple branching asynchronous quests, as well as toggleable encounters and proper zones like pokemon grass instead of nonstop encounters. No viruses in "main" areas but as soon as you step off the beaten path you have a chance for encounters.

I enjoyed it for what it was. It was 2D Megaman (something I was already a fan of) with BN elements. My only complaints is that I was certain traversal chips like Stone Block and Double were inherent to Megaman himself instead of having to get the chip to show up.
There's also no weakness order, just the Elemental wheel (Firem > Wood > Elec > Water), but 9 of the game's 16 bosses (not counting Firewall) are Null element, so elemental weakness wont really come up.

I've had this thought myself but I feel like the magic would be lost to a degree without the linear framework of the BN games. A big part of what the game derives its compelling nature from is that the incidents are happening directly to the protagonist and jacking in allows them to deal with that. An MMO would have a "something is happening somewhere but not to everyone" sense about it so you would be able to go on quests and such but it would just seem like "another day on the net" rather than a crisis that is on you to fix.

It's the same issue I think .hack would have if they tried to make The World its own standalone MMO.

Yeah its crazy vague and random. Not sure if anyone ever did a complete break down of the style system but I do remember reading some gamefaqs guides back in the day. I wanna say your very first style is completely random(element and the style) but afterwards it the normal what everyone else said. The next time you get a style change you'll have the option to either change to the new one or keep the old one. Ideally you'd want to keep the old so you can level it up to V3 and get all the perks(actually I can't remember if BN2 actually gave you an item or something to keep when you level them up). I also can't remember if it was BN2 or 3 that let you have up to 2 styles saved that you can switch to.

Because Battle Network is finished unless you want to deal with Patch running around with Hub basically retreading what Lan was doing except with a new MC. SF is at least a descendant far enough separated from Lan and Patch, could answer what happened to Hub after everyone got rid of their PETs, and also follows up on SF3 being a strong game.

Plus, they also had an idea of what it was going to be about and concepts.

Navis are still around, they're just in those cards you use for various specific tasks instead of something you have on you at all times. And honestly, that sucks, feels weird for a world built by the Hikaris, and said world being saved by the bonds between Man and Ai, to just chuck them from the narrative for so long. If you are going to try it out then get the DX and "Not Quite DX" romhacks for 1 and 2 respectively. SF1 had tons of cut content, three versions, touch screen minigames, and more that the DX version aims to restore, consolidate, and make better. SF2's makes multiplayer content possible to obtain in singleplayer in addition to lowering the encounter rate significantly which was a really annoying problem.

Honestly, I wish AquaMan had been picked instead of being saved for 6 over ToadMan like really now Team Colonel was a cool looking team until the last two picks. I think Number soul looks cool just that within the context of plot SearchMan and his operator Raika make better sense than Higsby and his navi.
