Steve Jobs purposefully removed flash support from the iPhone so that he could push his slop store. The upside was that the flash apps ran like shit on mobile and native apps were more optimized. Flash games continued to exist for s long time snd HTML games are now common, but outside of Happy Wheels there was never a lot of amazingly memorable games.

what zoomies fail to understand is that flash was basically the entirety of the internet for like 15 years. Government websites fucking used flash to render their benefits portals. It was expanded far, far beyond what it was ever really intended for (which was basically just an animation plugin)

It was so prevalent that there were "full stack" developers who worked entirely in flash. Almost any cartoon made after 2000 used flash. Some studios STILL use it (under a different name but still sold by Adobe). The ecosystem was so large that the games were a natural byproduct. The second that Apple noticed that Adobe had literally abandoned flash and moved forward with championing HTLM5, it was fucking over. There was little reason for something that had that much hardware access and control to be so bloated AND insecure. If it was just one it wouldn't have been such a fucking problem.

I loved flash games. I grew up on them. I have flashpoint and boot some of them up and even go to Newgrounds sometimes to see how how they're doing with fucking RUFFLE. But the age of hobbyists making games for free (and for their portfolio) was very, very small and it was for profit from an early point. Kongregate, miniclip, shockwave, etc all commercialized flash games and there were premium services offered, trial versions of full games, and other bullshit on top. The nascent stages of broadband internet were amazing but like all things, it changes.

/f/ is dead. Long life /f/

flash was a proprietary resource hog that developers had no ability to maintain on their own, and Adobe was a rentseeking piece of shit taking forever to patch any major vulnerabilities. Replacing flash with HTML5 and proper CSS was actively more efficient and secure. Ostensibly, webdevs had the tools to do things properly, but what happened is that most of them replaced Flash with fucking garbage javascript libraries that they couldn't maintain on their own either.

It had a black background, packed with pop up ads to the brim and the ui was atrocious because only 9 games in a 3x3 grid had images so the rest you had to try by clicking light green text links. Also fun fact it also had subbed anime on the side like it was for me one of the first sites I found that streamed anime with fansubs. Circa 2004.

What does gen alpha feel when they find these flash games? Do they ever leave their tiktok fortnite holes? I'm mid 20s and a zoomer, all I did was play flash games in school and browsed the ZSNES games library I found on a flash stick...

Because the infrastructure wasn't in place for digital distribution yet. Tom Fulp talked about what a pain in the ass it was to get a retail release for Alien Hominid because the big publishers controlled store space. Shit was free because there was no standardized reliable way to get people to pay for shit.
Once Steam allowed third party games rather than exclusively being a Valve platform and at the same time, Xbox developed its Xbox Live Arcade and indie outreach programs, the door was kicked open. At the same time, Web 2.0 and the parallel development of smartphones and subsequent reorganization of the internet around smartphones created a massive consolidation of the internet that allowed companies to target nascent audiences, e..g the Facebook browser game candy crush etc. demographic. The dot com bubble was barely in living memory and new billionaires were being born overnight.

The wild web was tamed, now is the time of monsters.

No better feeling than being a kid and refreshing every weekend to see if that game or animation series you followed got an update.
No following blogposts or twitters or anything. It would just randomly shadowdrop

i wonder how many of the "real art should be free" fags get money from the government that they spend on vidya or bitter wagies mad that some of us are self employed through merit/talent

You can't both lionize the period as the apex of creativity and simultaniousily treat it as something disposable and without value. That's a contradiction. I'm not gonna be homeless for your faux idealism which is entirely from the perspective of a consoomer with zero actual skin in the game who is just salty he's too stupid to figure out how to bypass a paywall or use a torrent

It's why I tell people to just steal my work but fuck you I'm still gonna charge people who can't figure out how to do it.
