I don't get this. Videogames are supposed to be fun, are you telling me there are losers who think if you literally saved and reloaded after dying or saved, left to you know, have a life, and then played again, you didn't "actually beat the game"?

Is this one of those situations in which people with ZERO accomplishments in real life try to pretend them "beating a videogayme without saving" is a life goal?

If you played a retro game for the first time in 2025, forget about beating it, you didn't even really PLAY it. A random kid who played level 1 and died in the year it was released will have a deeper understanding of it than you.

I used savestates for old games too when I was younger but after beating some NES games like Megaman, Ninja Gaiden or Castlevania without using save states, I can tell you that it's 100% cope. Once you beat those games legitimately, you're insanely good at them because you have to do replay the level or start from the beginning. It's hard but once you accept it, it isn't tedious either. Life/health suddenly has meaning

It doesn't matter if I'm one of those people or not. Imagine if we're talking about some old game that got save states in its re-release. I might've beaten the game we're talking about in the year it was released on genuine hardware and you still would not consider me an authority on it if my opinion on any aspect of that game differed from yours. It would not grant me even a modicum of respect from you. Probably quite the opposite. So in the end, when it comes to discussing games does it really change anything?

For me it's more about saving time and not spending hours backtracking just to get to the part where I know I might die again. Some of those old jrpgs are so slow paced with high rates of encounters that you are literally just mashing the A button just to traverse the world. Save states and fast forward are amazing for letting you experience a game and being able to fit it into your schedule.

I use save states on password screens

You are allowed to use as many save states as you please to practice hard sections but since that's the case you are assumed to have mastery over all segments and therefore must make a single run through the level without save states or you haven't beaten the game.

Look, you're probably mad that you spent a combined total of 10 years of your life at least to playing those old games and now someone can just use save states to give themselves a chance to live life while enjoying a good gaming experience. Depends on how save states are used and if they break the intended challenge of the game. For instance if you just make a save state to stop playing and just pick up where you left off later, I think that's legit. If you use save states to effectively get infinite lives without needing to restart a game from the start, that's no longer legit.

I sometimes do the latter because I have more fun than constantly repeating the first N levels just because I fail in N+1. I think this sort of design was mostly just aping arcade games which were made this way to much quarters.

I really don't give a shit. The OG Mega Man games are incredibly tedious, so I used the rewind/save states in LC. The X games are designed so much better that I had no issue with them. X6 is better designed than every OG Mega Man game.
