Which remakes or remasters have been better than the original games?
Anonymous No.716084259 [Report] >>716092740
None.

Dead Space was great, a lot of added content. I think a lot of people will argue otherwise, but I went and replayed the original game right after finishing the remake and it didn't age anywhere near as well as I remembered. The environments were very bare bones and sparse, the remake made the Ishimura feel a lot more lived in, more items scattered about for example. The moment you step in the arrivals terminal for example in the original game it's just an empty room basically with very little detail, in the remake there's a ton of luggage strewn around and other stuff that makes it look like people were trying to leave in a panic.

Of course, /v/ will get triggered that they changed some of the propaganda posters around the Ishimura by adding some black people or whatever.

well that's the obvious one, because the remake has basically completely supplanted the original game entirely.

THPS 1+2
Diablo 2: Resurrected
Crash Bandicoot Trilogy
Resident Evil 1 + 2 remakes
Black Mesa
MYST + Riven remakes
Mafia 1 remake
Demon's Souls

These are pretty much the only games I can think of where the remakes/remasters come close to the original games, and where some people might prefer the remake/remaster over the OG.

For me it's the Silent Hill 2 remake. They fucked a few things, but I think it improved on the original in most ways.

Besides the obvious cuts to avoid controversy, Dead Rising’s remaster plays better than the original

Star Ocean 2 R is the only one I can think of.

bottom is superior
less obvious repetion
and it look s like you are at the edge of an ocean, which is a great way to give a sense of scale with little render overhead

Anything done by Tengo Project, which I attribute to it being the original devs themselves.

Arguably the remake of RE1, but I think the original still has a lot of unique cool shit.

One of less than a handful of good takes on the original.
"Remasters" can eat my entire ass, and remakes are a plague on the industry regardless.

how can a remake be better than the original? it simply can't happen. the remake can be good enough to merit it's own existence but that is the best it can hope for. i love diablo 2 remastered, but i love it because it's 99% the original game with a small handful of QoL changes - the original game is still doing the heavy lifting

>Remaster
System Shock 2.
>Useless OS upgrades have been improved so even the shittiest ones are worth a look now 9the free cybermodules one is still terrible though, 20 modules is not enough to waste a slot for)
>The less conventional guns have been boosted
>Various stupid bugs and issues removed
>The guns actually have reload animations now
It's not a massive improvement, but it's pretty good all the same, and a slight improvement is still an improvement.
Of course, this is a remaster. I don't think any remakes are better than the original.

>MYST
That would be true but the characters are totally borked. I don't know why they couldn't revive the method they used with the og remaster they did where they wrapped a simple model with a live fmv animation as an animated texture, it actually worked really well imo and I've never seen it anywhere else. Way better than what they did.

Wolfenstein 3d is technically a remake of an older game called Escape from Castle Wolfenstein.
Anonymous No.716090446 [Report]
quick n dirty screen grab at low res.
I never see this technique in anything else, and they should have done this for the new one, Myst 5 does it similar and it was going to be used for Uru.

At a glance it looks like an animated sprite but I don't think it is, the aliasing on the edges could be blended out, but it's animated and you can look around it, it has depth. The trick is that you can't look at it from behind, which you couldn't do anyways.

I think it's just a digitized sprite with sloppy cleanup on the edges made to always face your perspective.

take meds
it doesn't work on the 2000 version; doesn't play nice with nu windows
Too lazy to make a webm.

Another angle. Maybe it's a sprite? When you look around it, it maintains perspective and it's seamless; For Myst 5 they actually do use models with projected animations and it kind of works, like an even earlier attempt at what was used on L.A. Noire. Even at low res this would have been way better and you never see it in other stuff.

System Shock is an objective upgrade in most respects

Most Halo fans agree CEA ruins a lot of the game's original visual design, they're more positive on H2A though

Personally I'd say there's still a solid amount of stuff CEA does I like, but yeah, it's absolutely not as faithful as it ideally should be, and even H2A falters in a few respects

The only thing is that they would have had to make the surrounding lighting match the baked lighting exactly, which I think they could have done. (Why the fuck do they have electric lighting down there now? They have magic crystals)

if you stretch the idea of a remake, I would consider TOTK to be better than BOTW in every way.
Everyone could agree that its just the same game with new features. But if you actually accept that fact, its a fantastic remake.
