Nah, fundamental problem with how its gameplay is set up. Generally speaking your ideal for getting a healthy influx of new players to a competitive scene for any given thing is the classic "easy to learn, difficult to master." But fighting games have a more "difficult to learn, even more difficult to master" thing going for them, which means that it is just always going to be a hard sell for new players.
There really isn't any way to fix that, because the difficulty of fighting games is the point, some devs think shit like the modern control scheme will help, but that is only one barrier out of many to even start playing fighting games well, and most people grasp that even if they still tend to blame shit like motion inputs.

this is what i've always said. the genre is shit because other games, you "git gud" by playing the game and you naturally gain the skills to dominate. in fighting games, everything is just a grind and it's not even about skill so much as it is about rote memorization of countless setups, combos, and tech. you will take forever to figure out advanced combos just by grinding out PvP matches.

in fighting games you can't even play the game without going into practice mode to learn your BNB and a couple basic blockstrings. probably some setups too.

No. Fighting games only got popular because there weren't many other options for other competitive multiplayer games back then. The second multiplayer in shooters became standard and got local and online infrastructure, it was over.

Yeah I enjoy smash a lot actually. FGC npcs disavow it but I always saw it as a fighting game.

Smash is way more intuitive to be honest. Yeah HP bar -> 0 is intuitive but the basic game mechanics are not like how comboing works (i.e. hitstun decay, combo routing), how blockstrings work, how mixups work, and various setups.

Smash is a bit unintuitive in that percents are weird but the actual fighting mechanics make a lot of sense with tech chasing and a low emphasis on comboing or breaking people's guard
