Also they initially showed it off playing TV stuff instead of games. Despite multiple attempts to correct course the brand damage was permanent and they lost their entire base. If they cut the TV shit and Kinect and released the S for cheaper than PS4 with BC, they would be in a much better position

If MS released the One S from the start instead and for $50 less than PS4, no Kinect, no TV, no DRM, BC from day 1, and no PC ports, the Series X would probably be outselling the PS5 in the US today because they would have retained their 360 ecosystem and the XB1 would have been a success. I keep telling people that the less a console LOOKS like a game console on a shelf the worse it’s going to be at simply playing games. These companies making every console look like a generic electronic device are more concerned with obscuring the fact it’s a videogame console than making it look cool and unique. to me it’s fitting that these consoles also are basically just shitty pcs that you can also stream movies on, browse the internet, etc. It’s not a console it’s just a home entertainment center device.


Essentially what I’m saying is with videogames you should judge by the cover. Judge the console for looking like a router, judge the game for having a minimalist generic cover art, judge the game for having a lazy phoned in main menu screen. All of these small details tell you how much care went into the actual product because if they gave a fuck about the actual experience they would also make sure the way it looks or the ambience it gives off represents the sort of experience they want you to have.

Game Pass, that Microsoft shit got gamers into the habit of renting games instead of buying them.

People shit all over Microsoft but I bought a Series S 4 years ago (Series X and PS5 had crazy wait-list back then) and I love it. Great console and gamepass is awesome. Is always grown up with PlayStations and even had a Wii but never had any Xbox, 360 or Xbone. I think it's awesome and doubt I'll go back to PlayStation. Only addition id say is a must buy is a 3rd party rechargeable battery pack. Cost me $30 but has a 3 metre cord so can charge while playing no issue. Just finished Expedition 33 and now playing through South of Midnight

I really think it comes down to identity, back in the OG Xbox and 360 (at least at the start of the 360's life), you can define what they are.
The OG Xbox was:

They bought a bunch assets, and just automatically assumed that those assets would churn out money without further intervention. They were of afraid of getting accused of managerial interference during 2020 you story after story about how managerial interference ruined projects in hollywood and how it would hamper the creative output. So they went hands off. They didn't realize the talent those assets had were a bunch of subsidized DEI hires with no talent and no experience. So when those assets predictably churned out the worst shit possible. So ironically what those studios needed was managerial interference and quality control. You spent BILLIONS Of dollars and got negative return on investment.
