But people are leaving en masse because Square is not putting any money and effort into the game. So you should be scared, because if too many people leave, Square will stop putting money and effort into the game.

actual hard numbers from SE themselves is the only reasonably reliable source of the playercount, but even then, we have no reason to care about it, you're worrying too much about something that doesn't actually affect you right now, if you gotta think about things about ffxiv put more effort into telling the devs how to improve the game in constructive ways, you should only care about the playercount if you're a fucking numbers guy at SE, doing so when you're not will just make you unhappy.

Playercount is down a lot and I'm one of the people who unsubbed. I gave SE feedback for over a year and they've either ignored it or done the exact opposite of what I wanted, so fuck 'em.

This game was fun for a while as a newcomer but it's stagnant and boring now. I've done all the old content I'm interested in and they don't release new stuff anywhere near fast enough to hold my attention because they refuse to provide the game with the development resources that it requires.

Yes we do. Budget. If SE execs see that numbers are declining then they have no reason to put more budget into the game. In their eyes, peak engagement has already happened and there's no reason to invest any more. Which means less for those of us still playing. I don't care about numbers for the sake of the numbers, I care because I don't want the game to be sunset by penny pinchers.
