It'd be nice but I'm not holding my breath. Fact of the matter is that most of the people who made the Prime trilogy are long gone and the gameplay shown at the last Direct didn't exactly WOW me either. Visuals, while good, aren't great because this thing was made with Switch 1 in mind, and all the cutscenes and talking NPCs just screams generic western dev and not Metroid.
You're now remembering that a good chunk of the people who initially left Retro went on to 343 to make Halo, and those same people are now back at Retro when they were hiring to help make this game.

What exactly is this hold up? Feels like they know they won't make 2025 but can't bring themselves to announce it will be 2026.

Is anyone concerned it'll be super safe to the point of being somewhat boring? It's been a long time since the last Prime game and they may feel apprehensive of taking too many risk to they'll play it safe and fill the game with nostalgia bait.

Pretty much. Talk in the trailer about *psychic* powers just screams Retro was looking for any kind of gimmick to use. And the implementation of it shown so far just seems so lazy and barebones too.

If MP4 turns out to be middling isn't the franchise kinda of fucked? By comparison DK hadn't really had a "mainline" game since 2014 prior to Bananza but said game turned out to be good so he's pretty safe.

It could set Prime back a while. Though Metroid Prime Remastered was extremely well-received so they'll probably just re-release 2 and 3 remastered to wash the bad taste of 4 out of people's mouth. Though there hasn't been a new Prime game in 18 years so it's not like they're desperate to keep the franchise alive so they can release a continued stream of games for it.

The tutorial boss had more mechanics that some of major bosses in the previous games, so maybe it'll be fun

Retro just makes the same games over and over again so it will be lame. Thank God donkey kong isn't locked with them anymore. Returns and tropical freeze were literally the same game.
