I liked the flash version of the game from well over a decade ago. When they remade the game with rebirth I was really turned off by the pixel art.
It wasn't until about a year ago that it drummed up enough interest with all the expansions to give it a shot.
It looks like ass but I don't think it could have been designed with any other style. It helps with the readability of things and the overlaying costumes couldn't be replicated in anything but 3D. But because of how much stuff goes on in later runs it already buckles under its current pixel art and slows down with how many particles can be on screen, I can't imagine it'd be any better in 3D. For that reason I can kind of forgive the choice of artstyle.

It's a remake of a flash game. when you buy it and start a new save you are initially only ever going to play and see things that were in the flash game. It opens way the fuck up the more that you play it to the point of it turning into a completely different experience the more it goes on.
The amount of mechanics you eventually unlock that are going to be constantly overlayed atop eachother is impressive top see in motion.
But yeah, buying and playing what is intially a basic flash game feels like ass.
