Steam is not just a store front. It's the entire eco system. They host servers, they host workshop for all the mods (a lot of which is slop). It's a marketplace to trade in-game items for real cash. It's an entire library of code for the game devs to implement common features like online server browsers, p2p with Steam friends, achievements, integration with Steam Workshop. There is probably more I'm forgetting. Steam as the store is just the surface layer, there is so much more to it and that is what all other stores are missing.

This. Steam has at a number of points encouraged competition. They never tried to punish EA for leaving, pulling their games and trying to make their own store front. Just told them that they couldn't fuck the end user out of the game they already bought and they needed to keep that data for those people in case they tried to re-download the game.
Its this consumer first mentality that makes them seethe more then anything. EA wanted to be able to double dip you. If they could, they would pull access to the game and make you pay for it again on their platform, never forget that.

Imagine the amount of extra sales that a game like Enter the Gungeon or Darkest Dungeon got from the modding community and being able to see the mods on the page for the game itself.
