when youre doing it solo, it feels very engaging and fun as long as you believe in the concept, but eventually youll get tired of looking at your own game, which makes you wonder if its actually good or not. and youll be at about 30% into development when this happens, and theres always going to be something broken, unfinished or otherwise retarded about your game no matter how hard you work on it. you cant share the load with anyone so you go googoo gaga insane and most likely you will try to be done with the project asap (or just give up)

when youre doing it in a group, its mentally much less taxing because you can just have other people do the stuff you arent good at or interested in. however dealing with other people can be socially challenging, especially if people dont agree what the game should be. also some very weird and annoying personalities are attracted to game dev, so if you dont find a good team youll have to play the "shoot down the idea guys terrible ideas, but nicely" or "try not to piss off your team's dedicated narcissist" minigames in between dev tasks. but if you do find a good team, i expect it is pretty great.

go ahead and ama me any other questions

It you're devvan' and you don't wanna kill yourself all the way through, you're doing it wrong.
The worst part is you'll put a lot of effort into a project with the thought in the back of your head torturing you: "Will people wanna play this? I think it looks cool, but will they too? Am I doing all this for nothing?".
But on the upside it gives me an excuse not to leave the house as a quasi-NEET: I still live with my parents and justify my presence by telling them I'm devvan' (which I actually am, I'm not bullshitting them, I'm working on my project with a fellow 4chinner everyday), I do chores around the house too and have promised them to show the demo once it's ready, I already showed them some models so they know I'm not lying. I was always too weird to be around normal people and have a normal life anyway, with my project I can be in my own world, the only one I can truly exist in

one of my greatest life regrets is not going to work for piranha bytes. imagine working in a comfy small german town with a small german team making small german games. life moved slow - we made the same game 20 times. we lived we laughed we loved. we created. we didnt copy the trends of the time - we knew what we liked and we made it.

It's really fun!
To me it feels like you're climbing a really big mountain and every now and then you get to a vertical wall that seems impossible to climb but eventually you find a way to climb it and then you look back down and you see how far you've come.
But whenever you get to a part of the mountain you get to tailor it to your liking and ever so slightly the mountain becomes a reflection of yourself or your preferences, goals...

Like being confronted with an endless list of problems that need to be solved in order to achieve your vision.

Very fulfilling though to see it all come to life.

It is also an ultimate form of media where a bunch of disciplines come together in order to provide an experience. Good luck with mastering all those disciplines. There is so much that you need to know that I sometimes feel like I am/need to be superhuman to do this.

This is why I work solo. Others delay the process by having opinions.

Also, a lot of devs are not worth their money and I can often produce results faster than the time it takes to hand things over to them. Only thing I really need others for is 2D/3D art and music. Even music is a maybe these days, because of all the great content you can already find online and AI like Suno giving you the basic gist which you can then pass off to a musician for hire. Same with 2D key art. I can generate an AI image, tell an artist 'make something like this' and then have the artist produce the key art.

Here is a screenshot of what I am working on at the moment. BOTW clone with town building elements.

Im a developer and as soon as I hear an 'idea person' pitch a game and ask us to make it I just tune it out and nod my head until the npc dialogue is over. Best case I pick up a few ideas for myself.

Never hire trannies or browns. So far the team is pretty great. Mainly eastern euros with some western euro autists.

if you aren't at least a bit embarrassed about what you're releasing, you're releasing too late
otherwise for actual development, dev every day and make it a habit. i've got the 'tism for diabloclones so it was never difficult for me to find the drive to work on it. i guess find the sort of game you can see yourself working on every day for months without it being boring for you.
