The Maw is an anomaly
It's left pretty ambiguous whether it's a giant mouth summoned from space, some massive warpstone mutation or the crater from an asteroid that the ogres willed into being the Great Maw after so many of their kind were 'eaten' in the impact

The "great maw" as a concept was introduced by Phil Kelly pretty late into the life of Warhammer Fantasy, during 6th edition of the game. He's also the one responsible for shifting them from an ubiquitous race of simple minded lads who'd adopt whatever culture they lived near to evil, psychotic mongolians. His ideas were pretty half baked and remained largely unchanged until Fantasy was axed at the end of 8th edition.

I mean they told us warriors were the main tank and paladins and sks were offtanks no matter how good they were. You and I wanted to be the man on the front lines
...but EverQuest for main tanks was a gear farm so unless you were truly devoted then we were just watching other people get the cool clickies

I think it works as both. Ogres are nomadic by nature and while the ones closer to home are more assholy, the ones that go abroad do so because, they're still assholes in it for food, but also gold. Turns out playing nice with Order get's you both pretty easy long as you aren't worshiping chaos.

Yep. I wasn't nearly dedicated enough for Warrior like you said. I only got to play from bumming my older brother's account at the time. I do remember Paladins and SKs getting really severe XP penalties though. Did they get rid of that in Velious or was it Kunark?

It certainly wasn't Velious, I was level 30 on my paladin in Iceclad Ocean and I hated that hell level and penalty every day. The only thing that kept me going was the cougar claw earring I could go to the commonlands and sell for 250 plat and afford stuff. If it was the weekend I'd go to the first level of tower of frozen shadow and hunt the spectres but you really couldn't run away because if you clicked that mirror to escape you'd likely be attacked by a snow dervish and while I could rez myself there was still an exp penalty and lost exp.
Meanwhile I watched druids kite 4 of those cougars at a time while I'm sitting here with my two handed practice sword because it proc'd thorns.
They probably removed it later than that. I retired my main during the start of the SoD expansion and I don't remember hearing about the hybrid exp penalty being removed.
HOWEVER I did feel disgust when they added faction to the Paineel skeleton guards because that was the only way I made money; killing skeleton guards and selling the sword and shield to the Erudite next to the guard corpse.
