I really liked splitgate 1 while it had players. Splitgate 2 sucked. You couldn't queue for multiple gamemodes at the same time, and they included some really retarded modes like the BR or conquest shit.

Basically the original game was more well received than they anticipated, and the way it was built was limiting them in some ways for development and so they wanted to revamp the engine or whatever and expand on the game.

Instead of leaning into what people liked about the original they decided to make classes with abilities and some God awful progression system. Crossplay the whole thing with the same insane auto aim for controller players 99% of shooters have to have, and THEN decided they needed to have a battle royale mode.

I don't think the death of arena shooters was due to stats, but more a desire for progression of some kind, it's why all shooters have to have some dumb unlock path for gear or leveling system for some arbitrary sense of progress. It's why people like BRs so much and it's why games like CoD are still so successful.
