Mecha isn't a genre. A genre is works that share similar tropes and story beats. The only requirement for a Mecha series is giant robots, everything else is mutable.

Gundam seems to be doing fine in Japan. Nearly all the arcades has a section for Gundam, and the arcades in Akihabara has floors dedicated to it.
