You can realistically get everything gameplay related without using real money, or at least get all the girls without having to log-in daily and the game becoming a second job.
Their monetization comes 90% from skins you can just buy without any gambling mechanics involved. You still have to pull the character, but it's way easier than in other games.
So paradoxically, the best thing about Azur Lane is that you don't have to play it as much as other gachas.
The gameplay and story are shit even for the genre standards, and the game design feels ancient.
Also, this is subjective but, IMO the newer girl designs are nowhere near as good as the old ones everyone knows.
