The two N64 Goemon games were absolute flukes. When you consider how much shovelware tier low-quality Goemon garbage was being churned out for other consoles (in Japan only) it's actually staggering that the west got the 2 literal perfect, shining, golden examples of what the series represents while avoiding 100% of the garbage.

That's because the N64 games were done by the actual main dev team and creators behind the Super Famicom games, the slop on PSX was basically just quickly churned out by some Konami B-team that never worked on the series before.

I always thought it was weird how useless some of the pickups were to progression. Yae Bazooka was optional and useless, Ebisumaru's Meat Hammer was also optional and I missed it a lot because it's pretty out of the way. Also not useful because who really needed extra HP pick ups.

It's actually kind of profound how many of these games there are. I think the PS1 had like four of them? One some awkward isometric game, a puzzle game, one that was more like the SNES titles and mostly 2D. Yet somehow only the two N64 games made it over, though frankly we should be blessed to have gotten anything when 95% of the library is never left Japan.

Having said all that, Mystical Ninja 64 has one of the best OST ever conceived.

The original two on NES were 'fine' and set the foundation for that fantastic SNES release we got (shit character renaming aside). Never got around to playing the other SNES titles though. I didn't play beyond the first N64 game though when I saw the other one was just a 2d platformer. Looked like a downgrade from the first one.

Mystical Ninja 2 Starring Goemon is indeed a masterpiece. Probably still the best game over screen. Also Plasma.

Really enjoyed both n64 games. Goemon's great adventures I bought used online, was a great purchase.
