Beat 6 finally after multiple attempts over the years (got bored/distracted)
Man that game falls completely off in WoR. Story feels completely disjointed, and I get that its because its open ended, but it feels bad that the only scene where your party has any real interaction is an optional Gau scene.
Also everything falls off aside from magic, and nothing survives 2-3 ultima's anyway.
Theres a ton of memorable things in WoB, not so much in the second half which is a shame because that part was mostly new to me.

Overall a good game but I rate it below 7, 8, 9, and 10 personally. People who rate it highly what did you like about it?

I'm a hardcore fan with FF8, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. There's actually a group of nice that you can talk to throughout the game. The first time you leave the clinic, three girls are standing in the hallway, one of them is brown. The trio are close friends, and you can find them in different locations in the garden through out the game. They graduate the seed program, they have a fight, they talk about how the miss their parents when the garden starts flying, and even one of them gets injured after the fight with galabadia. Each one has their own personality. The brown one is basically Squall, but is actually honest with her friends. One of them is a a little mischievous while the third one is a nerd.
I really loved the npc in ff8. There is something special about them in general.

It's a mod called Project Angelwing: Ultima. People have made similar mods for FFVII and FFIX too, because SE will not do it themselves for whatever reason. Yeah, Nojima actually stated in an interview that it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. It's just that somehow, his office in-joke made it into one of the Ultimanias and fans started taking it as gospel, so he had to come out and say "No, I wasn't being serious when I said that. But the origin of the meme came from when Nojima was making FFX-2. He suddenly noticed that a lot of how similar Spira's setting was to FF7's. In FF3 a minor boss makes his castle in a flying tree or some shit. His name is Sorcerer Hyne. In FF8 there is deep lore you have to look for by talking to NPCS about a creation story of how a Sorcerer Hyne (who we never really see) split his body in two (the sorceresses power and Ultima Weapon but Ultima Weapon isnt said explicitly) created humans as a slave race and people rose up and fought him splitting his body in two.

Issue was 2 year dev cycle was mandated. It worked for other games. But 8 clearly needed another look at script to clean it out. It also hamppered technically game. Disc 3 is short. Really short. It has 1 boss early on. Then boss rush at end. Then disc 4 closes everything off.

FF8 is a game with so many holes that were wide enough that fans could come up with a bunch of different theories that actually made sense or would have at least made for a better story than what we actually got. That's why the whole Rinoa=Ultimecia thing gained so much traction.

Here are the weird similarities between FF8 and KH:

KH's starting world Destiny Islands being inspired by Edea's Orphanage that is by the beach.
KH's using star symbols as a metaphor for destinies become intertwined like shooting stars were used in FF8's. The star-shaped Paopu Fruit being one of them.

It makes sense. A lot of Squeenix's games after FF7 seem to heavily involve utilizing ideas that were dropped in previous games. Almost every game of this era is linked in some way to another game that came prior. Even the fundamental ideas behind KH's version of time travel seem heavily derived from concepts from FF8.

FF7 and 8 clearly had a lot of ideas left behind on the cutting room floor, perhaps moreso than other games, and this ended up bleeding heavily into other games like Parasite Eve and later Kingdom Hearts. This may in part be why Kingdom Hearts ended up being such a clusterfuck. It's a repository for ideas that couldn't make it into other games, such as Nomura's FFV13.

People are just enamored by its ideas, but the execution is flawed and too many useful ideas got abandoned due to time constraints. FF8 as it is is kind of dumb and full of holes, held together entirely by fans filling in the gaps with their imaginations. The game you have in your head is better than what you actually played.

You have to understand that due to how PS1 games were made, they were able to fit a bunch of shit into them for relatively cheap. Character models are just a bunch of low-poly models. Towns and dungeons could be plentiful because most of them were just still images pasted over basic polygons as well. Have you never wondered why FFX's world design was such a huge shift from the original? It didn't even have an overworld, you just moved from location to location via a rudimentary 2D map. This is why it's so hard to make HD remakes of PS1 JRPGs. If you remade those games under modern standards, it would be expensive as fuck. There is no modern JRPG that's as full of content as the PS1 games. It's far too impractical.

Kitase is at fault for this one desu. He rejected the FF13 pitch Nomura made and finished first in favor of the one Motomu Toriyama prepared. Crystal Tools being made in 2005 was separate from this since 13 was being made as a PS2 game at the time but it was clear Nomura wanted his time in the spotlight with his manifesto political conflict anti-KH with guns Final Fantasy and Kitase went with the interactive movie pitch known as Colors World with Lightning in it. And then this project made by people with next to no experience in 3D level design caused Crystal Tools to only work for linear interactive movie games.

Both 13 and 14 stole Versus staff for 9 months every year from 2009 to 2012. And then ARR and Tabata happened at the same time keeping Nomura stuck in Osaka. He never had any long-term development with the Tokyo team, only 3 months yearly.

Rebirth actually put a definitive end to the idea that FF7 is a sequel to FF10. In Rebirth, it's revealed that species that aren't indigenous to a given planet can't enter its Lifestream, meaning they can't die. The Gi are endlessly tormented by this, and went insane because their souls couldn't handle the stress of being around for millions of years.

Technically it's the battle planning team and some of his codirectors. The battle planning director left Square Enix but hasn't been seen on any video games at all since Pokemon Masters in 2021. This was also just before KH4 was announced and so were Reaction Commands.
The animation director for all of KH and co-creator of TWEWY is the guy who left earlier this year (likely the fall guy for Missing Link since he directed all the mobile games). He was Nomura's friend since 7 and followed him even to Crisis Core Reunion and then left.

Ironically, they probably do. It's just that SE's situation's been shaky for a while now. Mostly likely, they don't blame Nomura for what happened with Versus 13. The reason they kept pulling staff from Versus 13 was probably the other projects desperately needed it. The reason Nomura got pulled from 15 was probably because they needed him to work on too much other shit.

The circumstances under which V13 became FF15 are somewhat suspect as well. The fact that they turned it into FF15 implies that something went wrong somewhere. It implies one of two things: 1) they were unable to make a "real" FF15 for whatever reason or 2) they WERE making FF15 but it was either stuck in development hell or they had to scrap it early on. Whatever the case, it seems to me that SE was getting antsy about not having a new main line Final Fantasy and decided to turn V13 into FF15 as a last minute emergency decision. Because think about it, why would they take what was originally a spin-off, stuck in development hell because people kept getting pulled from it in order to work on other things, and turn it into the next mainline title of their flagship franchise? It's unthinkable. It reeks of desperation.

So there are two lines of thought here. They transformed Versus 13 into Final Fantasy 15 purely because they were desperate to announce a new main line game.
But also, they understood how shaky the situation with this game actually was, so they pulled Nomura from it in order to focus on KH3 and FF7R. Somehow, a main line Final Fantasy game became a lesser priority for them, which is completely fucking bonkers.

Nomura had a crack team of game system autists that just so happened to work with experts on serious stories influenced by real life politics and social issues because the most autistic game system autist to ever live in Japan just so happened to be their boss. I read that the VII Remake level design director was the level design director for XII and he worked with Nomura, bringing a bunch of XII/TLR devs with him because he needed their help specifically. They knew how to make things worked in 3D space. And then people bought and loved XV because you didn't need to learn any complex game system to interact with the space around you.

Thing is nothing really seems to suggest that Rinoa is powerful or special enough to actually be Ultimecia. It's all circumstantial. In fact, there's little to suggest that Rinoa is very important at all. She just happens to be important to Squall, the one who's actually important. The only real issue with Rinoa being Ultimecia is that it adds further uncertainty. Either Rinoa is fated to become Ultimecia and thus fated to fall to Squall, or Squall defeating her changed the future somehow, but now the question is why. If true love prevails, why did it fail to prevent Rinoa from becoming Ultimecia? And if the reason Rinoa became Ultimecia is because she never met Squall, then that implies that Ultimecia meddling in time travel created a butterfly effect that just happened to result in Rinoa meeting Squall which ultimately proved to be her downfall. Which ultimately means that Ultimecia lost purely due to coincidence and bad luck.

They're not really that wishy-washy about it. The fact is Nojima didn't really consider this. Ultimecia has the power to read the minds of those she possesses, as well as read the minds of those she draws from. The reason she's able to summon Griever is because she "drew" it from him. She can even draw spells from herself.

The reason for these parallels is because she stole these thoughts, feelings and memories from Rinoa and Squall. Unfortunately, Nojima didn't put nearly as much thought into this stuff as you guys did.

Then we get that fucky sequence where shit keeps repeating but we never get to properly see Rinoa face. We even see cuts of scenes that never ever happened in the game. Rinoa in places she never was through our playthrough. It all ends with the sound of Squall's sword hitting something. The same sound his sword does when you use his Limit Break. And then we see him crying and the white feather hitting a black ground.
