The regular Wii has been hacked inside and out. You can do basically whatever you want with it.

The WiiU hack more primitive hacks, it's slower to start up and is chained to the gamepad for certain things.
If you want all of your WiiU, Wii and GC games on one hard drive you need to make Wii VC injects, which is way more work than dragging and dropping iso files.
It doesn't support 240p so it's worse if you're playing on a CRT.
It can technically play more games but the experience is worse when doing things a Wii can do.
