That's the problem, the writing never dared painting him as the ACTUAL villain, even though he acted like it. It would always pull some bullshit like 'he was justified' or 'he was fighting someone even worse'. And don't get me started with 3 suddenly getting cold feet and trying to walk it all back by going 'uhhhh he actually embodies hope uhhhhh everyone was mind controlled'

I don't see it at all. Kratos is instantly established to be an irredeemably cruel bastard right from the get-go, when he murders the boat captain for literally no reason. And in GOW3, you're forced to murder several innocent people for no reason. Never once did they pull any punches in showing how much of a psychopath Kratos was. He had a tragic backstory and his villains were assholes too, yeah, but at no point does that ever downplay his senseless cruelty

Yeah, that's the problem, the game tries to have it both ways by having Kratos act as an irredeemable asshole, but always makes sure to keep a convenient excuse in its back pocket by making sure everyone is an asshole to him at all times for no reason, so you can always reason 'well, they had it coming'. That's not evilness, that's just revenge and retribution, it can even be seen as a twisted form of justice. It all comes crashing down horribly on the third game, where we have things like the murders you mentioned sharing a room with him suddenly being saddled with a surrogate daughter so the writing can go 'see? he's a good guy deep down!' and the absolutely retarded conclusion where his actions basically unleash the apocalypse on Greece but still the game attempts to try and play it as a bittersweet ending by pulling the 'kratos was hope all along!' bullshit out of its ass in the last second.
The writers were never brave enough to fully commit to Kratos being evil, and as a result he comes out as making no sense and being extremely unsympathetic and unlikable, no matter if you look at him as a bad guy or a good guy
