I haven't played it yet, but is there an explanation?

Are Mario and Jumpman two different people, or the same?
Is Cranky no longer the arcade DK?
Did young Pauline just get time-traveled to the future?
Is none of this answered and Nintendo just did what they want?
I've also heard it's a prequel to Odyssey but I don't know the details.

Isn't Pauline III singing music in New Donk City at the end of Bananza? I'm pretty sure she's the same person as Pauline Jr.

Also, you're telling me Jump Man/Giuseppe is Pauline Jr's father? Then why is he with Mario's family in the movie?

Otherwise everything checks out. Cranky is still the original DK, all the DKC games happened, young Pauline grows up into Mayor Pauline

It's just a bit confusing how Mario himself ties into everything now

According to Nintendo, it's still Mario in the original Donkey Kong. That might throw a wrench in the Lady != Pauline theory.

But then again, Mario is canonically a time traveler in Yoshi's New Island. And he has the means to do so thanks to E. Gadd. So it very well may be the same guy after all.

On the forbidden layer you can find Cranky and he has some dialogue about “climbing up girders” which was a clear reference to the arcade games. In addition there are some posters in Donk City that seem to imply that the events of the arcade games happened in the past, and there’s also a costume for Pauline called “Lady” which might indicate that Pauline and Lady are two separate characters. The issue is that we have no hard evidence of Lady being distinct from Pauline, let alone Lady being the mother of Pauline.

There are fossils that still imply that 8-bit DK was Cranky "in the prime of his youth", and that Lady was a separate character from Pauline (possibly the grandmother that she mentions)
