Why did the 3Ds flop at 249$ but the Switch 2 is selling like hotcakes at 499$?

Nobody pays more than $200 for a handheld. Switch 2 and all those chinks "handheld" PCs are sold on the home system angle/PC but more portable angle making it worth.

Do you think they'll port Bravely Second to the Switch 2 as well? I'm glad I was able to finally buy the first game uncensored after needing to pirate it years ago.

Because the switch was literally a revolutionary cultural phenomenon. Every gaming device today is either a pc or a switch clone (the ps5 is basically just a pc for normalfags too dumb or poor to get a proper gaming rig). Now the original switch, not some off brand knock off chinkheld, is back as the most powerful and cheapest device of its kind, and buying one is a no-brainer for most people.

Itโ€™s nuts they sold it for $250. With inflation thatโ€™s $360. $275 in 2017 when the original Switch came out which is almost the $300 it cost but you got more fire your money compared to 3DS. I donโ€™t know what they were thinking. That whole 3DS and Wii U era was a weird time for them

GB-3DS were made to be companions to Nintendo's home consoles, the Switch was made to be the successor to Nintendo's home consoles and handhelds finally bringing the power of the home console to the handheld. The Steam Deck is being sold using the same method; Nintendo's is bring home gaming with you in your hands, Valve's is bring Desktop gaming with you in your hands.

Switch 2 having the full switch 1 library and running them better is not equivalent to the 3DS still playing DS games but with shitty scaling.
Switch is also not primarily a portable console, and even AS a portable console it's an entirely different class of device in size and purpose.

The market has also grown, cost is not the only factor people consider in the real world, and inflation does exist and works both ways no matter how much people want to pretend it doesn't. Real wages haven't gone up, but wages have gone up. Most people get more money today than they did then unless they're americans on their eternally frozen minimum wage.

We were teenagers when the 3DS came out and didn't have disposable income to waste on a 3DS. Now game consoles aren't an expense we even think about.

I thought the 3DS did pretty well for a dedicated handheld?
Regardless the actual answer is that the Switch developed a cultlike following to an insane degree that ended up following it to the sequel console. It also combined the home and handheld consumerbases.
So it's partially cultural and partially just because options were reduced.

Smartphones came into prominence with the iPhone 5 and whichever Samsung Galaxy (S3?) and took the majority of the audience that the original DS would have maintained. That's why the 3DS had literally half the sales even with Sony basically giving up on the Vita 1 year into the market.

The real answer is that the massive install bases of the DS & Switch were of different varieties. Most DS owners were first-time gaming system owners, tons of casuals popping in cartridges that were more apps & software than games half the time; the 3DS didn't offer the same with its exclusive library and its new gimmicks didn't appeal to that crowd. The Switch's install base is almost entirely people who are there for the games one way or another; Nintendo die-hards, people who wanted indie games on a portable before handheld PCs became a market, nostalgics, etc. A promise of a stronger Switch that plays all the same games but better with more exclusives is an easy sell to that crowd. Also tariffs had a lot of people buy in early assuming things would get way more expensive soon.

Wii to WiiU is a similar situation as DS to 3DS but even worse because of the horrible marketing for the thing and the lack of aggressive discounting or true killer apps (Smash hit 3DS first, mainline Pokemon was only on 3DS, etc.)

I bought a launch 3DS and the only game I got with it was Samurai Warriors Chronicles
That was the only 3DS game I had until Mario 3D Land came out like six months later

People trying to compare it with the Switch 2 launch where you already have Mario Kart World and DK Bananza are retarded

No because it was a shit game. That's why the bravely second mechanic and the postgame scene involving Magnolia was cut from the remaster.

3DS had fuck all for games at launch. Whether or not you want to admit it, the Switch 2 launching with Mario Kart gave it a heavy hitter out the gate, and then it followed up with Donkey Kong Bananza which actually turned out to be a great game.

By this time in the 3DS's life your choices were... shovelware, a Layton game which was niche, and a shitty port of Street Fighter IV. The selection was paltry.

Because the switch lets lazy parents distract their kids with a mario kart machine when they complain their phone/tablet isn't good enough
I have no idea why people are overthinking this, it's just like the wii, most people are fucking retarded and just need a distraction device, they don't care how good it is

Pretty much, I was rather disappointed with the library it had but it's the product of the old "Perfect for the Switch" fan culture and the simple fact that the technical limitations of older devices like the 3DS or DS that granted them such strong catalogues at a much lower price per game.
That isn't to say I haven't enjoyed my Switch but it didn't make me inclined to purchase the next iteration of it and I had fewer games that I ended up buying overall for it.

Hey the Wii was fun if you knew what shovelware to ignore.
But I will say I've only seen a child playing a switch in public twice, but many more times with adults. Phone shit is cheaper (free) and tablet parents are unlikely to have the extra cash for a Switch.

The switch is actually not that handheld friendly despite being marketed as one (really anything past the 3DS isn't) and that's probably why
Compared to the 3ds or your phone you can't really carry it in your pocket and need a dedicated bag for it, something tendies manchildren are proud to lug around but children aren't

Nintendo's fanbase was originall split with the console and handheld

The handheld division was hard carried by Pokemonfags many of them buying Gameboys to the 3DS for mostly Pokemon while the console fans do it for Bing Bing Wahoos and are more generally Nintendo fanboys

The Switch and Switch 2 don't have this problem so it sold really well
