Most of original videogames had been made by nerds for children and other nerds. Especially this goes for japanese games. A lot of nerds are nerds because mild autism. Original games were cool, full of emotions, honesty and good will. In many cases also a lot of cool things.
Later entries (in videogames in general, not FF) had introduced somewhat more serious plots, interactions and themes, sometimes many subtle things (as both good directors and nerds love complexity, good directors are also talented and experienced enough to make it enjoyable), but intense simply shown emotions and ways of depiction were still the same.
2007+ western movie directors can only direct movies for normalfags, not things for children and autists. Those directors see fidelity, cover it with bloom, cover it with special effects, drain away colors because latest fad and call it a day (because most of them are also shitty directors with shitty pattern recognition and, as a result, a very poor sence of style and beauty).
Most of FF fans (who still are) are autistic, who can see all bullshit, inconsistencies and discoloration of movie directors - hence FF is in decline. Modern western games have exactly the same problem, but the core audience for them (because of Doom and many shooter games) always had higher percentage of normalfags (non-autistic not nerds) - hence suffers slightly less.

This right here is the game that broke video games as a whole, the fact that it sold so much and remained on the charts for years is what sentenced us to this purgatory.
