Define "late" and define "justified"-people just say these words like they aren’t loaded with a thousand different contexts. Is it a 34-week emergency scenario with a dead fetus and a dying mother? Or you talking cartoon villain stuff like "oops changed my mind 8 months in"? The entire debate gets hijacked by edge cases, strawmen, and people who’ve never even touched a woman.

squid is just the closest rough broad stroke approximation your mind can percieve it as
even if you can percieve it though, your mind cannot perceive details of its appearance or the fact that it's there beyond that because it's a being that exists outside dimensions that a human is capable of perceiving, and the brain doesn't know how to process that, hence the cascading feedback loop of total mental breakdown

Curious how lovecraftian shit only does this with vision and not any other sense. Think how absurd and contrived it would feel if a character smelled an "imperceptible" smell and went insane because of that. How does this genre get away with this bullshit?

Lol. There's nothing about a smell that could possibly shatter your concept of reality, and neither is there with vision. If you saw something that you didn't understand or that physically didn't make sense then you would just assume your eyes were being tricked. Being able to see things does not mean that you must always think that every single thing you see must always be real no matter what.

Also that screencap is clearly just an inexplicable spergout, and it is just as absurd as I said.

That's bullshit, but there is for real an optical illusion that seriously mess with your vision for days or even weeks afterwards. But you need to look at it for like 20 minutes and squint right and do it correctly, it's not an instant lmao death trap.

And the effect is not that strong iirc. Though possibly very long lived.

That ending is hardly the best outcome when the world turned into some post-apoc wasteland fought over by kaiju and their cultists, and Sam is still a regular joe at the end of it. Perfect ritual without seeing the visitor's true form is arguably the best outcome even if Sam mutates into an eldritch abomination, since he gains godlike power but retains his humanity in order to use his new form to rebuild and protect the world.

Anonymous No.716210860

It wasn't seeing. Plenty of people saw the visitor, just the single eyestalk.

What happens to Sam is the visitor actually shows Sam its whole form, projecting everything directly into his brain, which destroys his brain.

Because the squid doesn't understand how a separate living thing can actually exist so the most efficient way it knows how to observe shit/itself is to shunt its consciousness into various parts of its impossibly, infinitely large whole. For a brief moment when observing it you become another extension of it because it doesn't know how to not do that with all the reality manipulation and insane assortment of body parts that entails. Many can't cope with the impossible sensations and briefest flash of the infinite.
Really literally everyone is already changed to some degree and can lightly do magic shit around them, looking at it just makes you realize it and lose focus of what the self is.

To be fair, there is actually an image that can fuck up your color vision for a while if you look at it too long. Eventually somebody will discover some kind of digital medusa/basilisk that fucks your day up just by witnessing it so its good to put the fear of god into the children early.

Its not any official explanation because there will probably never be one but its the best i can piece together out of everything you observe in the game
>people don't mutate when exposed, they only mutate when they notice shit is wrong (the pastor and gaming kid on the bus)
>keeping your mental state is 90% keeping your cool and staying grounded to who you are as a whole (rather than obsessing over one aspect)
>the Visitor has literally never seen anything like mankind before out of millions upon millions of years (minimum) of existing
>though he is also so impossibly big (what you see is a probe extended off of a singular node on the far side of the oort cloud) so it takes a while to relay information even with warping space-time so there's a chance there's still other life out there he hasn't seen yet

It's like if you'd let a person experience every single cell of your body doing it's thing at the same time, all of the micro and macro processes that take place. Could you imagine, being cognizant of every red blood cell in your transferring oxygen at the same time? How it would feel for your guts to filter out useful material from food?
One of our brains' most useful trait is the ability to forget. And our body graciously does not have receptors for every single aspect of our bodies. People with ADHD can have difficulty forming coherent thoughts and keeping priority in their heads. And that's just with the "limited" information we consciously think of.

Now consider what fully experiencing a body larger than our little solar system would do to a human brain. That's what the Visitor does to Sam due to their miscommunication.

To be fair with shit like garbage worm or swat car there's a lot more 'noise' going on to fuck up your composure and thus ability to adapt to the bullshit you're now in. I still think its theoretically possible that someone could get assimilated into a much larger, complex whole and end up becoming the dominant mind in it or at least maintaining their own sense of self, like that one musical episode of billy and mandy with the brain eating meteorite.
And nobody knows exactly what the fuck hellcar is, he's clearly unique somehow like the giant eye in floor 1

>how could looking at a very big squid make someone mad?
It does so indirectly
For the Visitor, witnessing and changing have the same meaning, and it is capable of seeing anybody who can see it (including just through depictions of it). When you perceive it, it perceives you, and when it witnesses you, you change as a result of its observations.
Mortal minds aren't meant to inhabit the bodies that result from the absurd changes the Visitor's gaze brings, so they typically malfunction and go completely insane. A "lucky" few seem to retain their cognizance and may be able to resume a normal-ish life (depending on how drastically they mutated)

There are entire families of flowers that get kinda explody when the seeds are ready.
iirc, a combination of parts of the old flower getting hella dry on purpose and putting the entire structure under tension, sending the seeds flying on any slight bump.
I do remember toying with those here in France when I was a kid, although the "explosion" was always disappointing - might be because I was bad at finding actually mature ones.
