CaCs, multiplayer and Chao handling make it a massive launch. The gameplay is rough around the edges and bugs go unfixed for long but this is generally overlooked.
It continues to remain relevant long after its initial success thanks to an autistic fanbase fixated on building, ultra raiding, breeding and farming for schematics with cruel drop rates.
Nintendo doesn't bat an eye.

I dont know if a rougelite bullet hell hybrid would work for Sonic, but who knows, maybe I'm wrong.
