>>716289105Pennsylvania is full of little places that used to be important, but just aren't anymore. You can be all the way out east, and see roads and trails and infrastructure and shit shit named for some little town all the way on the other side of the state. The truth is that the western third of PA was America's first frontier, dating back to even before independence, and it all just gets glazed over in favor of talking about the 19th and 20th century industrial and civil history of the area. There's nothing about the events at Armstrong's hands at Kittanning that set the tone for the rest of the history of American expansion. It's just a footnote, even though the story ought to start there. But there were no outlaws, cowboys or revolvers involved, so it gets brushed aside in favor of talking about some tiny spit of near-worthless land out west for the millionth time, and the greatest accolades the nascent seat of American History lays regular claim to are a shitty Richard Gere movie about a different state entirely, and a couple shitty football players.
