Considering the novel one can buy for Kindle, maybe they wanted Balan to be a new multimedia franchise with moderate success/popularity but the plan didn't work.
I guess what went wrong is simply the concept itself...the idea of using only one button for everything or ''all the buttons do the same thing, forget about complex controls'' may sound kind of great on paper, but in execution...it doesn't work to be honest.

He never actually intended to make a game, the entire project was cover so he had access to internal Squeenix confidential information so he could do insider trading. That was his actual goal. The game was essentially a front.

They tried to have pure, unfiltered SOVL carry a boring bad game but it was too ugly to pull it off.
