I have looked into this and my running theory is fan conventions. It gave them enormous heads and in some case even groupies. They as a group believe they ARE the character instead of someone acting and bringing to life what a writer wants. Yong Yea is an example of this, probably the best

Not in my view.
I think Yong knew subconsciously that landing Kiryu (whether he deserved it or not) will be the biggest role of his career. Not that Kiryu is high up there, but rather he peaks at Kiryu.
So of course he tries to milk it of all it's worth, he just didn't expect it to backfire on his ass. No one else sees his garbage roleplay as cool, he just made an ass out of himself and got clowned on. Sadly, he's still Kiryu, but anyone who plays Yakuza in EN is kinda missing the point

I like the guy who played eng Ichiban personally. I think back to the emotional scenes in yakuza 7 and I feel like he really sold them, felt earnest. Makes the difference much starker in infinite wealth when he and yong yea are talking in the same scene.
