Ocarina of Time

How much actual hype was there when Ocarina of Time was about to come out? What was it like experiencing this on release day?

I didn't even notice or really know about it.
I remember it was a Final Fantasy and Pokemon era for sure, though. Took up more of my and my friends time by far. Also Gex lol.
My 2 friends who had N64 didn't own OoT, one of their brothers did and asked me for help with the Water Temple because he knew I played LoZ, ALttP, and LA.
And I was still playing SNES personally.

I know that feeling. I didn't, but I was disappointed. I'd played every previous Zelda and I just remember the first couple screens of LoZ were dense with Octorok and the landscape was mazelike with trees and rocks.

I really hate how Zelda has turned into essentially 1v1 combat most of the time, I want swarms of shit to slash.

>This thread mostly being people not alive and old enough to remember
It was a big release but games were not hyped nearly to the level of more modern ones where the hype is this huge anticipation that explodes on release day. Games like OoT or Pokemon hit their highs well after release when enough people had gotten it via word of mouth so that everyone was talking about it. It was huge (with people who had an N64) about a month or two after release. It was not a cultural hype train like Pokemon was. It was a game that everyone ended up getting (along with Mario 64, Goldeneye, Mario Kart) and everyone pretty much loved it. Blockbuster had a wall of just OoT and people would rent N64s just to play it.

It was a mainline Nintendo game, hot off the Super Mario 64 craze.
And LTTP was very popular in its own right.

And thatโ€™s the crazy part-Nintendo couldโ€™ve easily fumbled it. Going full 3D was a gamble, but instead we got Ocarina, a game that not only nailed the transition but basically wrote the playbook on 3D adventure design. Lock-on targeting alone changed everything. The fact it holds up mechanically to this day says it all.

It was the game of the generation, just like GTA 6 is for zoomers. It was everywhere in videogame magazines, it was the talk on websites and forums, and because the internet was so limited back then, only the most dedicated videogame fans cared about. I got it Christmas '98, and had just started listening to industrial music and got a lava lamp as a present.
So my time playing Ocarina is linked to playing in a dark room in winter snowstorms, my bedroom only lit from dim red of
the lava lamp while songs from Remix Dystemper played softly in the background so I didn't wake anyone. I would also intersperse
jack off sessions watching scrambled PPV porn on the TV. So my experience with it was somewhat depressing but
oddly comforting as well.

When I hear this shit it gives me heavy nostalgia now

It was a mystifying game in the lead up since magazines would put out beta screenshots that looked like a different game every time. 3D was in its infancy so it was hard to say what any game was really going to be like. It was highly anticipated by pretty much everyone interested in vidya though, and every kid I knew that had it (including me) played it for 6 months straight afterwards. it was a really unique era since the hype machine actually delivered on a consistent basis. Regularly seeing articles like "Keep an eye out for this Metal Gear Solid game, we didn't know anything about it but played it at E3 and can't wait for its release" and then it comes out and is actually awesome hit way different than almost everything since. The late 90's output was insane and they're still chasing its franchises trying to get the lightning back in the bottle 25 years later.

Yeah, this is pretty accurate. I didn't really know the day that X game or system was going to release because I didn't even have the Internet at home until 1998 (I had to go to the library to use it before that and I only used it to play MUDS). I'd just go to funcoland or walmart and then the game or system would just be there lining the shelf. If it was a big release, there would be a bunch of demo stations set up for it.

Enthralled is the right word. I remember it was the first time I saw a video game trailer as one of the previews in the movie theater. Seeing the willst thou suck commercial on the silver screen made me so excited for the game. Until then I had only seen video games marketed in magazines or on TV. I was enthralled since that moment.
The game itself was every bit as magic as that experience made it seem. Seeing the animated title screen made you realize you were playing something special right away. Then starting the game and the amount of detail in Kokiri Forest with the little fairies flying around, it made you feel like you were right there with them in this wonderland.

I'm older than you and have played more games than you. OoT's Hyrule Field is complete garbage and a stepdown from the very previous two Zelda games. Go ahead and tell what what you do on Hyrule Field.

That doesn't even make any sense in this discussion you retard. No one gave a shit about Hyrule Field because of what was in it, they cared because, holy shit, its a massive arena that you can move around in in 3D. You keep outing yourself as a zoom zoom with every post.

Amazing argument. You know those linear zones connecting other areas are also garbage, right? Why doesn't it have anything remotely similar to the complex cave system in LttP to the north? Why do grottos have nothing in them, like maybe you get a chest with a single ruppee? You play MM and you find a grotto and it can have a mini-game challenge? Why is Hyrule Field so fucking empty.

I got the game when I was 5 so I wasn't exactly in the sort of spaces where hype was present. It was the first game I had ever seen with a story and I learned to read just because I was jealous my older brother was having so much fun playing it and I wanted to have fun too. I ended up not liking the game all that much and enjoying all the racing games on the N64 more and throughout our childhoods my brothers and I played just as much, if not more, of the Super Nintendo our family had gotten for cheap the year prior. Lesson is, never buy new systems for your brats, they won't be able to tell the difference anyway.

I was 10 when it came out. I'd never played Zelda before, despite owning a NES, SNES and GB. I saw an ad on TV, and couldn't believe how amazing it looked. I rented it, but got filtered in Kokiri Forest, because I was a retard that didn't understand the puzzle-solving aspect (I mostly played platform and fighting games). I couldn't find the hole to crawl through in order to get the sword.

I rented it again, and managed to make it all the way to the road to the castle, but couldn't figure out how to get in (I didn't see the climbable vines). I was determined to beat it though, and play as the adult Link I saw in magazines. I bought a copy of the game from Toyworld with my own AU$30, and I used a guide to help me beat it.

It's still my favourite game ever, and I still have my golden cartridge. I also got Majora's Mask for Xmas 2000 - now THAT shit filtered me, and I didn't beat it until I sat down with it again in my 20's.
