Why is Magic either vastly overpowered or complete dogshit in video games? There is no in between

What's a game where it feels good to use Magic?

arx fatalis if you like clever tricks in grimy settings
magicka the first one, pirated if you want to play as an unstoppable elemental master

There isn’t one.
Okay, I did have fun in Arcanum. Being a mage is a bit overpowered there

It's only shit in games if the developers didn't show it the respect it deserves.

Noita is a good wizard game and how overpowered/dogshit the magic is scales directly with how well you can utilize the system and your given spells. It's a run-based game with a randomly generated map, if that gets under your skin.

Unironically Code Vein has the most satisfying magic I've ever seen. Soulsniggers could never capture the sovl of casting in that game.

Nothing quite felt as good as magic bursting in FFXI. The melee make a skillchain and the mages all throw their strongest nuke during the window. It felt amazing everytime.

>magic in an action game
>generic damaging sorceries but bloated with elemental variants
>spell slots contest with weeaboo fightan magic weapon moves
sovl more like sovlaki because you're gonna get skewered

Geometric wizard implies a lot of spells and interactions.
Even if you had the time to code all of that, it would play like ass on normal controllers.

I really liked the magic system in tyranny. Few games let you modify spells that much.

considering the dungeon exploration flavor, seed-based alchemy, and complete lack of overarching plot, you can say it with a K
>muh spell unlocks, muh currywurst definition
it ain't real nigga, people came up with it long after all the original "rogue"-adjacent games came out

Because magic is basically the fantasy equivalent of owning a firearm. Either you're trying to scare somebody with it or it's a lethal killing machine.

I'm fine with that. That's how magic should be.

Fictorum or whatever it's called is actually pretty good (not polished or anything like that). You basically collet spells and modifiers. When you cast, you choose the intensity of the modifiers by more or less drawing a rune.
It was pretty entertaining to make a spell that summoned dozens of pillars that all shot various spells in random directions and spam it to the point my frames were single digit. Wish someone would make a better version of it soon

see: mage v rogue matchup
and ignore the mage v warrior matchup where if the mage somehow loses he should probably uninstall

nightreign does it better because you can use the R2 for a 2nd spell
more people would play int/fth pure mages if there was a hybrid system where you can use whatever spell on every button instead of just being reliant on the stupid roulette wheel
Anonymous No.716297884 [Report]
Dragon's dogma has some if the best magic out there, but it does make me sad we never had a multiplayer dragons dogma (that wasn't a JP exclusive mmo) as a lot if it is support based like grapnel, a spell which holds an enemy in place so others can wail on it

yeah like a normal mmo, you can do that on pc:
https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/1757
and since there is no reason to stay on the offical servers with dogshit connections netcode and warping over seamless there's no reason not to use it
im currently invading w/ a rellana cosplay int/fth caster now and its pretty fun

I don't consider meta progression to disqualify you from roguelike status, I don't even consider permadeath to be a requirement for roguelike.
Noita isn't a roguelike because it doesn't play like fucking rogue.

Souls games spells aren't based on lock on, you have to use both thumb sticks and even run and jump while casting. Learn how to set up a proper spell que and quick swap mid animation cast you lazy fuck

You cant go back, you cant be 16 again exploring Aht Urghan for the first time again. You cant go back to summer 2006, even if you somehow made a 1:1 clone of the server at that specific time the zeitgeist had changed. It'll never be the same. The world is different, the players are different, you cant go back.
