They have a thriving culture where just stepping outside your door is an adventure everyday, and if they want to make money with technology there are a thousand industries for real world applications that they end up working for, so even the privileged or successful among them have no reason to grind out indie games to make $20 on steam. Just think about the amount of work it takes to make a successful game. It's insane. Learn a few programming languages and work for a low wage at a "real job" and you are going to be better off and they know this.
Indie game dev is increasingly a hobby for people who are free to spend time on it without making any money. It's brutally competitive right now and requires 10 different skillsets.
