While lots of corsets were eventually made more extreme in order to be sexualized, corsets were just the bras of the ancient world. They were tight to keep the breasts in place but instead of using modern elastic materials or the shoulders and back for support. They strapped and tied it to the torso for support instead.

In short. Corsets existed because they couldn't make good bras the way we know them today.
But today the extreme corsets that are all about minimizing or eliminating the waist, is all most people think of when thinking of corsets because when the modern bra all but replaced corsets, the freaky ones were the ones that persisted in spite of bras.
