Several times I was surprised to find a game that I liked was Chinese only to do a bit more research and find out they were Taiwanese. Rabi Ribi, Thymesia and Lost Life.

Actual Chinese games need to have some ccp appeasement that makes an aspect of them weird and soulless to everyone outside of China. Usually the story. In Taiwan they arent all brainwashed so they make cool stuff still.

Rabi Ribi is a gem, legit one of the few games that surprised me with how much heart it has. Whole dev scene over in Taiwan is lowkey punching way above its weight. Meanwhile mainland devs either have to censor half their ideas or make mobile gachashit for the party line. No wonder everything good ends up being Taiwanese or Hong Kong indie devs flying under the radar.

You'll often see signs with "no photography" outside shops in Taiwan, no matter what they sell. I was puzzled as to why they didn't want anyone to take pictures of, say, a souvenir shop or an electronics store.
The explanation I got was that the Taiwanese put a lot of pride into having original shit and they know a bunch of Chinese will take pictures and try to copy their wares.
