I gotta be honest, this is a game that should have grabbed me but didn't. I don't know what happened. I got to I think, the overworld, fought a bush with the Asian lady and the White guy, practiced the stupid fight until I killed it hitless, blew up to level 16 for some reason, and found the red haired girl shortly after. I think I remember a vaguely under water-ish area too. Idk man. I don't have trouble with dense RPGs, for example I quit E33 to replay the 6 dot hack games and ff12, but something about E33 didn't work for me and I don't know what.

Not really, no. I personally enjoy it, and many others do as well, but Ff12 is very, very heavy on the "single player MMO" vibe. I dont know if you have finished the game but the twist in act 2 retroactively justifies that. That's one of the things I enjoyed about the story. All the silly shit you encounter through out the game like the cutesy talking wooden dolls make sense because they are living in a simulated reality that the Dessandre family created. So it makes that Maelle would be important in the little universe her family created.

For what it's worth, I think the painted people are just Aline's thoughts brought to life so they appear sentient but they never actually had real life. I told my friend that it's easier to imagine if we think of Rembrandt's self-portraits being animated by him, they would be real since they're based on him but also not real because they're but shadows compared to the real deal. Furthermore, if the game is about the artist's relationship with their art we should probably consider that Aline did not want to die in the canvas given how her creations have the will to fight.

I think if you going view the painted people as real people (in the sense they are sentient, feel emotions like the rest of us, etc) then it completely deflates the "tough" decision at the end and makes the Verso ending the obvious choice. Which I don't think was the writers' intent. I think both endings are tragic in their own way but I went with the Maelle ending because I thought it was unfair to destroy a whole world over one family's grief.

I disagree because they are one and the same, reflections of each other. Lumiere shines the most when the family is at the height of its grief and it wanes as the light returns to the Dessendres, and the canvas loses its power in Verso's ending because painted Verso and the soul fragment have finally united in agreement, being at peace because they know that the world will continue without them.
This is also I think anyone trying to argue for a Lumiere where painted Verso gets gommaged by Maelle is a brainlet because we have to think about what Aline's intentions were: She had to use Verso's canvas because it's where his childhood friends are and she definitely wanted her family to heal (See painted Alicia and how IRL Aline bit back poisonous words like calling her a foolish girl while she doesn't do that in the canvas because she's lost sight of her original intentions). There's no such thing as a Lumiere without Verso because he's the lost light.
