Anisotropic Filtering
Anisotropic Filtering set below x16 should be punishable by death.
Developers of games where it only goes up to x8 should be publicly hanged.
Anonymous No.716308114 >>716308467
why hasn't this issue been solved yet?

People don't know what this setting does.
Developers pretend that 8x is all that people need, despite the fact that the difference between trilinear and 16x in terms of fps is non-existent on modern hardware.

i'm not sure why it's still even a setting, the performance hit has been negligible for well over a decade now

>yfw nowadays materials use so many textures that every dev leave filtering at x4 or eve x2
Im sick of this clown world

but is it necessary if anything in the distance is going to have 9 other post processing effects on it

Sometimes lower AF can hide the repeating textures especially further down the horizon

switch games look like shit, no AF only makes things worse. They should hide tiling with proper sampling.
Same principle behind TAA, it only make things worse.

I feel like they should just disable the bump map when you're too far away

how did we get here?
they were already able do decent water in the 90s

It's much more responsive without AF.

thats another story, they are just incompetent or dont give a single fuck. Not even ps2 games had that issue

This was fixed years ago. Same with Mario Kart

If China ever makes a game console we are so fucked.

All they have to do is make 8/10 games.
Anonymous No.716310678 >>716311040
I mean, AF does have a significant vram impact and it does have a significant performance impact in certain situations. You can thank consoles for handling it poorly for decades for the reason its not as prevalent as it should be.

Any game that uses less than path traced lighting is basically made for poor fat thirdies

it has a noticeable impact at high resolutions (4k, 8k). if you're still playing at 1080p or 1440p its not noticeable. memory bandwidth limits quickly come into play when you're running high res + hdr.

Even thirdies with gtx1050 can AF 16x without big performance impact. Your post is not relevant.

If your card doesn't have at least 16gb of vram you shouldn't even try playing in 4k. Nobody plays at 8k when we talk native games and not emulators

you can have 16gb of vram but dogshit bandwidth. capacity is not the same as speed.

exactly.

I usually turn it off. FPS >>>> Graphics, almost always.

Can you turn AF 16x in that game, or do you lack vram?
It's obvious I meant modern games
>>716312384
Bandwidth doesn't matter in modern day. It's a meme value, just like ram speed.

Damn. Did you get at least 1 kill thanks to the 2% of gpu utilization you saved?
Anonymous No.716312672
>>716312384
No u retard, of course it has to do with the amount of pixels rendered like everything fucking else happening on the GPU. Its just the laziest optimization, like upscalers.
The user shouldnt have to play the game at 4k to get 90s level of quality from textures
Anonymous No.716312706 >>716312921

I pretty much only play single player games. Having an utlrasmooth experience looks better while you're playing, even if a screenshot doesn't capture it.

>or do you lack vram?
Alas I do - I only have 24gb of vram with a paltry 960 gb/s bandwidth :(
Anonymous No.716312921
>>716312706
I know, but you're not losing that much. I turn this on max even on steamdeck alongside with texture quality.
