Being abrasive, snarky, unkempt and rude is seen as fighting back against oppresion, rather than just hurting their cause by being petulant and immature. I wouldn't like this character if she was male. If she was male, it wouldn't be written that she was right about everything all the time with everyone deferring to her unassailable judgement, he'd be written as a clueless dickhead who is the butt of every joke.
